Founded in 1951, the National Board of Examiners in Optometry is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization whose examinations are universally accepted for optometric licensure in the United States and internationally. NBEO’s mission is to serve the public and the profession of Optometry by developing, administering, scoring, and reporting results of valid examinations that assess competence. NBEO has a full-time staff of 18 and utilizes over 100 optometrists as subject matter experts nationwide in support of its examination programs. NBEO is one of the few national boards in any profession with a repertoire of exams that include computer-based tests, an advanced competence exam, and clinical skills test using standardized patients at the National Center of Clinical Testing in Optometry. This role is a part-time, onsite position based in Charlotte, NC.
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources or complimentary degree
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in human resources or recruitment
- Exceptional communication skills, writing skills, interpersonal skills, and ethical mindset
- Adept to problem-solving and conflict resolution
- Quick learner and self-starter
- Sound judgement
- Extensive knowledge of HR policies and systems
- Familiarity with HR software and working knowledge of MS Office
- Detail-oriented and organized nature
- Understanding of federal and North Carolina HR laws
- Ability to work independently while contributing to team environment
Primary Responsibilities
- Oversee, refine, and execute employee standards and procedures
- Manage staffing process including recruiting, interviewing, background checks, and onboarding
- Prepare employees for assignments by establishing and conducting orientation and training programs
- Ensure legal compliance by monitoring and implementing applicable HR federal and state requirements, and maintaining records
- Identify and recommend areas of improvement to internal standard operating procedures, including team restructuring and morale
- Coordinate and/or lead staff training (Code of Conduct, Sexual Harassment, Diversity, etc.)
- Lead lunch and learn meetings on pertinent topics with staff
- Maintain the NBEO Employee Handbook
- Maintain and enhance time tracking procedures including non-exempt employee hours and away requests
- Maintain management guidelines by preparing, updating, and recommending policies and procedures, including other organizational policies as necessary
- Handle confidential matters with discretion
- Manage NBEO testing accommodations process for optometry candidates, including application review, decision process, and notification to candidates
- Follow federal and state laws and regulations to develop and implement policies, procedures, and forms to achieve compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Consult with professionals as needed to ensure ADA accommodations decisions are appropriate and reasonable
- Maintain ADA files, ensuring proper documentation to support accommodations and associated decisions
This position is expected to require 20-25 hours per week. To support the health and safety of NBEO employees and optometry candidates, NBEO requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or to have received an approved accommodation based on medical condition or sincerely held religious belief or practice.
