Position Overview
Primary Function of Organizational Unit | The Juvenile Justice Institute in the Department of Criminal Justice at North Carolina Central University is an interdisciplinary hub focused on research and policy issues in the broad and ever-changing juvenile justice landscape. Juvenile Justice, Youth Development, Delinquency Prevention, and Community Engagement are key topics of interest. Guided by principles of Ecological Systems Theory, JJI aims to promote equity and social justice and to eliminate disparities in mental health for marginalized, underserved youth and young adult populations. Understanding risk and protective factors for resilience is a major theme in JJI's work. JJI focuses on local, regional, state, and national level work through research collaborations and original scholarship. JJI strives to be a beacon of support for social science research at NC Central University and to interface with faculty, students, the community, and leadership to produce high quality and impactful research and scholarship. This full-time EHRA non-faculty position will report to the JJI Executive Director. In addition to the production and support of research and scholarship, a goal of JJI is the promotion and exchange of information and the development of resources that will facilitate the prevention of juvenile crime in North Carolina. This includes increasing access to evidence-based interventions, prevention strategies, and collaboration with community partners. JJI's work focuses on several populations of interest, including transition-aged youth, youth and families in rural communities, Black and other minoritized populations, and youth connected with the foster care and/or child welfare systems. |

Primary Purpose of Position | The Department of Criminal Justice at North Carolina Central University invites applicants for a Research Associate in the Juvenile Justice Institute starting approximately July 1, 2023. North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is a comprehensive university located in the Research Triangle region of North Carolina. JJI is a research and policy-focused institute that interfaces with faculty, students, scholars, leaders, and the community. This position will effectively function under the supervision of the JJI Executive Director. The Research Associate will work to foster research, scholarship, and community engagement at North Carolina Central University in the Juvenile Justice Institute (JJI), located in the Department of Criminal Justice in the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities (CASH). |
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities | The Research Associate must have experience with community engagement, knowledge of the juvenile justice and criminal justice systems, and strong quantitative and / or qualitative research skills. Demonstration of successful research is critical, including success in conducting and publishing research. Knowledge of the grant funding landscape and experience with grant writing are preferred. Candidates must exhibit strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with community stakeholders, political officials, practitioners, and the academic community. Candidates must have the ability to multi-task under the pressure of multiple deadlines. Must have the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with teams. Experience using SPSS, R, or other data analysis software, plus Microsoft suite products (Word, Excel, etc.) required. |
Minimum Education/Experience | A Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Juvenile Justice, Psychology, or a related discipline is preferred. A minimum of a master's degree is required. Experience conducting population-based research is required. A strong record of obtaining external funding and grant management/writing skills preferred. Applicants that are currently pursuing completion of doctorate degree in the aforementioned areas will be considered. |
