NEW HIGHER SALARY : $42,464 - $74,313 The Challenge Join the crew and help manage one of the largest ferry systems in North America! We are looking for a Marine Maintenance Master to join our Ferry team in Currituck county, but you will be working on any ferry terminal along the NC coast. In this role, you will :

  • Operate NC Ferry marine maintenance vessels and equipment, including all support tugs, dredge, crane barge, support barges, and any other equipment near coastal, sound, and river waterways.
  • Supervise deck, above deck, and engine room staff.
  • Assure safe operation and navigation of the marine maintenance fleet while underway and enforce safety guidelines and rules for vessel crew.
  • Interpret radar, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and weather instruments and oversee these operations.
  • Oversee compliance with all safety and Homeland Security rules and regulations.
  • Provide written reports for review of work.
  • Use crane barges to install, repair, and maintain dolphin clusters and fenders.
  • Assist with replacing any damaged / aged channel markers along channel routes.
  • Work on ferry dock ramps and gantries by maintaining, replacing, and repairing all cables, sheaves, and hydraulic cylinders.
  • Operate under the general supervision of the Environmental Supervisor / Dredge Superintendent.
  • Work on ramps and gantries and learn how to make necessary repairs.
  • Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under adverse work and weather conditions.
  • Communicate, establish, and maintain effective working relationships with fellow staff and supervisors.

What You Bring

  • US Coast Guard-issued MMC endorsed with 100GT Master or above (must be presented at your interview).
  • Certificate as Radar Observer
  • Marine Radio Operator permit issued by the Federal Communications Commission.
  • Valid Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC).
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • U.S. Coast Guard Master’s license for 100 ton Inland with Radar Unlimited.
  • Master of Self-Propelled Vessels of 100 Gross Register Tons.
  • May require National Crane Operator certification.
  • Knowledge of the operations and basic maintenance of dredge vessels, tugs, and barges.
  • Knowledge of applicable state, federal, and US Coast Guard laws and regulations.
  • Experience and knowledge navigating a vessel involving ship handling, seamanship, chart reading, plotting courses, radar, GPS, and other communications equipment.
  • Management skills in leading and instructing staff in all areas of marine maintenance activities and vessel operations.
  • Ability to communicate, establish, and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and supervisors.
  • Experience in marine construction and maintenance including piling installation, dredging operations, and ramp and gantry repair.
  • General knowledge of dolphin repair and replacement procedures.
  • Master of towing certification preferred.

Education and Experience

  • High School / GED diploma, and
  • 2 years experience in Dredge Operations and related marine maintenance work; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
