What are the responsibilities and job description for the Teacher position at NCC?

SUMMARY: To provide classroom leadership, design and implement intervention for children enrolled in the Early Intervention Program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide supervision to classroom staff
  • Promote a team atmosphere in the classroom
  • Act as classroom Team Leader
  • Conduct annual assessments and other assessments as assigned.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of IFSP/IEP’s
  • Design and implement activities to meet each child’s goals and objectives
  • Ensure that written lesson plans, progress reports, data sheets, and other pertinent documentation is completed
  • Prepare and present relevant information at team meetings, parent meetings and evaluative meetings
  • Ensure that updated records are maintained for each child assigned to the classroom
  • Ensure that written and verbal communication with parent consistently occurs and is documented
  • Maintain communication and work in collaboration with clinical team
  • Make appropriate clinical referrals regarding materials, equipment service needs
  • Assist in the monitoring of the medical and dietary needs of each child
  • Facilitate family participation through home and center based activities
  • Participate in scheduled bus duty
  • Adhere to all program policies/procedures
  • Assist in identifying and implementing age appropriate behavior management techniques
  • Participate in staff training activities and staff development.
  • Participate in transition process when applicable
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Maintain appropriate cleanliness of room and materials including strict adherence to universal precautions

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Co-manage Teacher Assistants
  • Provide feedback to be used in Performance Evaluation of the Teacher Assistants

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • An Associate’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Early Childhood Education or Early Childhood Development OR
  • An Associate’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university, at least fifteen (15) credit hours from an accredited college or university in Early Childhood Education or Early Childhood Development and at least one (1) year of supervised experience working with children in a licensed District of Columbia Child Development Center or its equivalent in another jurisdiction OR
  • At least forty-eight (48) credit hours from an accredited college or university, at least fifteen (15) credit hours from an accredited college or university in Early Childhood Education or Early Childhood Development and at least two (2) year of supervised experience working with children in a licensed District of Columbia Child Development Center or its equivalent in another jurisdiction

OR

  • A valid Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, specifying that the individual is qualified for the assigned age classification. All teachers are required to have an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood by 2020. All new hires with a CDA must be enrolled in a degree seeking program.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in written form information to internal/external vendors/clients, staff and management, and maintain professional relationships.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, assessment reports/evaluations, business correspondence, and memorandums.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical operations to include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Lifting of up to 30 lbs is required. Other physical demands includes bending and stooping to assist children with dressing needs, toileting, transitioning from sitting on floor or chair to standing during classroom activities, transferring non-ambulatory children to and from wheelchairs, strollers, chairs, therapy equipment, changing tables, cribs, etc.

Children with a diagnose such as Autism, Down Syndrome, Sensory Integration disorder, Behavioral problems, Cerebral Palsy, often will pull/jerk away or bolt/run from caregivers. The ability to intervene in these situations is required. Moving or lifting of any child may be required in an emergency situation (i.e. to assist toddlers in evacuating the building or to ascend or descend stairs) and/or to prevent injury on playground or other outdoor situations/activities.
