NEADS, a national non-profit organization dedicated to changing lives of people with disabilities through the use of expertly trained Service Dogs, seeks a passionate and skilled Service Dog Trainer with 3 years of experience in dog training and care. Experience in client relations, particularly with individuals with disabilities, is a plus.

Position Summary

As a Service Dog Trainer, you will play a crucial role in transforming the lives of individuals with disabilities by training our World Class Service Dogs. You will use the NEADS training curriculum, which adheres to LIMA (least invasive, minimally aversive) training methods and follows Assistance Dogs International (ADI) standards. A component of our training includes working with inmate handlers as they train Service Dogs. The Trainer will contribute to the team effort of making successful placements with clients and teach new clients the skills and knowledge to work effectively with their new Service Dogs.

Responsibilities:

  • Train Service Dogs according to the NEADS curriculum, utilizing LIMA methods and adhering to ADI standards.
  • Directly train dogs living on the NEADS campus and indirectly train dogs through working with incarcerated individuals within correctional institution settings.
  • Assist in the successful placement of Service Dogs with clients.
  • Conduct training sessions for new client teams to ensure a smooth transition and foster a strong bond between the client and their Service Dog.

Qualifications:

  • 3 years of experience training dogs using positive reinforcement methods.
  • Enthusiasm for a physically demanding role with a collaborative team environment.
  • Comfortable working in a correctional institution.
  • Willingness to travel to various work sites weekly.
  • Experience instructing individuals with physical disabilities is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with clients, colleagues, and volunteers.
  • Basic computer skills for maintaining training records.
  • Located near central Massachusetts.

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand and walk long distances outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Capacity to lift 60 pounds independently and up to 80 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to work in a kennel environment with multiple dogs.
  • Comfortable working in a prison environment.

  • Job type: Full-time, non-exempt position
  • Salary: $19-$21/hour, depending on experience
  • Location: Princeton, MA
