Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Telecommunications Engineering Project Consultant located at the York Operations Center in York, Nebraska. Other physical NPPD office locations in the state of Nebraska will be considered, and this position will be eligible for a partial telecommute, following successful completion of the initial training period and after obtaining supervisor approval. Position closes April 10, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.

Position Summary


This position will provide leadership, collaboration, and direct oversight for the interactions between the Telecommunications Engineering team and external Engineering support vendors. The position will perform engineering evaluations, strategic planning, analysis, design, project planning, and project coordination for new and existing Telecommunications systems.

Education, Training and Experience


Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics, Engineering, or related field and 8 years Electronics, Telecommunications, Engineering or related experience (OR) an Associate’s Degree in Electronics, Engineering, or related field and 10 years of Electronics, Telecommunications, Engineering, or related experience is required.


Experience planning and coordinating projects is required. Hands-on engineering design work is required. Demonstrated leadership and design skills in previous work experiences is required. Experience managing vendor partners is preferred.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities


Provide Engineering consultant oversight to external vendors by managing the technical scope, financial budget, and requirements of project work assigned to outside engineering resources. Ensure costs, scope, safety, and standard technical/business practices are followed in projects from assignment to closeout in all project phases. Requires effective utilization of project management methodologies, prioritization, and technical acumen to achieve the desired project outcomes and schedule. Collaborates with Telecommunications leadership and the organization while serving as a resource to support project completion throughout the District.


Complete Engineering oversight required to analyze the technical and economic feasibility of new construction projects, modifications to existing systems or equipment, or changes in operation or maintenance of existing systems. Typical tasks may include: Obtain field data, investigate new technology, review regulatory requirements, review design standards and codes, develop conceptual design, prepare design calculations, determine economic feasibility, determine technical feasibility, write technical reports, present reports.


Review contract engineering work for application and verify it meets District standards and is of sound professional judgment. Direct or assist in the direction of work projects to technicians and others assigned on projects or special assignments.


Collaborate with internal and external customers on identification of and validation for business work necessary to grow and/or convert the telecommunication system. Establish solid working relationships with key industries and customer entities to stay updated on utility and telecommunication improvements occurring in the field.


Provide technical direction or input to others within the telecommunication team as it relates to meeting deadlines and budget constraints associated with elimination of technical debt, new construction, and/or existing upgrades necessary to meet growing customer demand.

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range. Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.


Pay Grade - 15 Monthly

Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range: $8,888.00 - $11,333.00


Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska) Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
