Overview
Transport participants to and from activity center and drive bus for outings and field trips. Ensure that children are transported safely and that no child is ever left unattended on the bus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Drive safely with participants' well-being uppermost;
- Have a list of the children being transported in vehicle and the names and telephone numbers of parents or guardians;
- Be familiar with the use and contents of first aid kit;
- Be familiar with the operation of the fire extinguisher;
- Ensure a bus aide is aboard on all transportation runs;
- Ensure that children are received by a parent or another responsible person as designated by the parent;
- Ensure there is an adult with children at all times, no child is to be left unattended at any time;
- Ensure that children enter and leave the vehicle from the curbside unless the vehicle is in a protected parking area or driveway;
- Ensure that children under the age of six (6) years are carried or helped into and out of vehicle;
- Notify supervisor in advance if unable to drive;
- Maintain accurate records regarding the daily transportation of children and the daily operation of the bus including daily pre-trip inspections;
- Report any mechanical or driving problems to the supervisor;
- Maintain the bus, including but not limited to: oil changes, lubrication, transmission fluid changes, and cleaning inside and out;
- Ensure that children are secure in child safety restraints;
- Ensure bus does not move until all adults and children are safely seated and restrained;
- Maintain knowledge of area roads, including alternate routes;
- Operate bus in a safe, prudent, and legal manner;
- Operate routes as written to ensure route times are adhered to;
- Attend all required trainings;
- Complete the transportation attendance form daily;
- Walk through the bus at end of route to ensure no children remain on bus;
- Pick up assigned bus at the beginning of the program year, and deliver the bus back to the assigned station at the end of the program year, as directed;
- Comply with random drug testing procedures;
- Notify supervisor immediately of any moving traffic violation;
- Be familiar with and adhere to NEMCSA Head Start Transportation Policies and Procedures;
- Work in cooperation with parents and other program staff to meet all program requirements.
