Position Summary Information

Summary
Reports to the Supervisor, Comparative Medicine Unit ( CMU ). Responsibilities include animal husbandry, performing routine veterinary laboratory tests, performing veterinary medical treatment on a variety of animal species, and record-keeping under supervision.

Pay Grade: 4
Starting Pay Rate Range: $14.50 – $16.91, commensurate with experience
Location: Rootstown, OH

Principal Functional Responsibilities
1) Performs animal care duties, i.e., feeding, watering, cage/pen changing, monitoring health status of animals, and reporting changes to Manager and/or Director
2) Performs record-keeping, such as U.S.D.A. sheets, temperature/humidity and light timer sheets, animal treatment sheets, and breeding records
3) Monitors supplies used in animal duties and notifies Manager when supplies are low
4) Performs general sanitation and maintenance in animal care areas
5) Performs routine diagnostic testing and sample collection; e.g. fecal exams, PCR testing, etc.
6) Assists in handling and restraint of various laboratory animals, administers medications as needed, etc.
7) Assists investigators in the conduct of certain research projects
8) Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Education/Degrees: High School Diploma or equivalent; additional coursework in animal care and use desirable. AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level preferred or must obtain within two years of hire, at a minimum.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience: One or more years of animal care experience preferred

Physical Requirements
Must be able to utilize applicable equipment necessary for the job, as well as basic office equipment. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, sit; talk and hear. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
