Commissioning Technicians focus on hands on execution of field based commissioning activities within their discipline, including verification of installation, energization, and function testing.
The role is characterized by:
- Strong technical skills within the specified discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Rotating Machinery, Electrical, Telecoms, Instrumentation) with a significant portion of experience being ‘hands-on’ fieldwork in their respective discipline
- Ability to efficiently work with other groups (engineering, construction, quality) to resolve issues
- Good communication skills and assertiveness to intervene when work is being done unsafely or not per required procedure
- Commitment to project priorities of safety, quality, and schedule.
Responsibilities of Commissioning Technicians may include any or all of the following, depending on the specific needs of the assignment:
- Provide support for relevant discipline Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) as company’s witness
- Provide input for the development of A & B check sheets
- Review and provide input for function test procedures
- Support System Owners and Discipline Leads throughout Mechanical Completions & Commissioning Phases particularly with Field Activities
- Organize discipline commissioning activities at system level
- Ensure Red Line Mark-Up’s of P&IDs, SLDs and other critical drawings are controlled
- Facilitate and participate in discipline and system walk downs
- Track and witness construction A check sheets & commissioning B check sheets. Ensure correct information is recorded on the check sheets and other data required for handover to operations.
- Monitor instrument punch clearance progress. Verify closure of raised punch items.
- Identify any safety related issues during commissioning activities at site
- Participate and lead tool box talks
- Develop and review Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) for suitability to task
- Participate in regular safety hazard walks
- Act as the first company contact for safety issues in relevant discipline scope/systems
- Prepare daily discipline commissioning progress report
- Identify, intervene, and recommend corrective action for any shortfalls affecting safety, schedule or quality during the discipline commissioning process
- Track permit to work compliance, bypass and overrides approvals for commissioning activities on a system and subsystem level
- Serve as link from Operations to the Project Team for completion of outstanding work after Turnover activities relating to their discipline
- Participate in Pre Start-Up Safety Reviews (PSSRs) and Final Walk downs
- Assist the effort to capture commissioning lessons learned
- Monitor the working conditions, cleanliness and overall condition at a system or subsystem level
- Interface between Company, Contractor, Subcontractors, and Vendors in order to effectively do work.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience in a closely related position
- Discipline appropriate certification(s) or equivalent professional experience
- Proficient in Work Management Systems
- Effective communication skills; ability to clearly and concisely describe conditions in the field and recommend remediation steps
- Team Player; exhibits effective teamwork when working with persons over whom the person may have no direct authority and willingness to assist others
- Ability to adapt to tight deadlines, heavy workloads, and frequent changes in priorities
- Knowledgeable of Project Completions activities and typical commissioning practices including typical Systems Completion Database software (e.g., WinPCS, MC , CoConsole, Orbit) • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of software programs
