What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety, Health & Environment Director (Remote) position at Nestlé?
POSITION SUMMARY:
Is responsible for coordination, design and functional oversight of the SH&E site/regional support programs within the market(s). This includes existing facilities and products as well as new product and business development/integration. Collaborates closely with the various Nestlé stakeholders to inspire and empower SH&E leadership by all employees. Responsible that required audits are conducted and ensuring that all operations are in compliance with Nestlé and regulatory requirements. Provides technical expertise and support to ensure compliance to Nestlé requirements such as ISO 14001, ISO 45001, regulatory compliance and overall safety and occupational health. Utilizes tools such as auditing, trend analysis, root cause analysis, etc. to achieve continuous improvement and business objectives such as reductions in safety incidents and environmental impacts. The position has direct responsibility for select categories of sites and for Nestlé USA and other supported affiliates (e.g. Professional, Health Science, Nutrition, etc.) and provides support as requested / appropriate for other Nestlé businesses as required.

Develop and drive SH&E strategy to support & deliver Market objectives. Provide technical and professional support to multiple diverse facilities and groups of personnel to deliver on objectives. Collaborates with other business leaders including Manufacturing Heads and Directors of other supporting functions including, HR, Engineering, Quality and NCE. Build strategic relationships and alignment with key stakeholders to deliver internal goals.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
In addition to overall input to corporate safety strategies, initiatives, programs and procedures, responsibilities include supporting operations via hands on counsel, supervision, assessment and implementation of :
1. SH&E strategies, programs and plans - Develops SH&E best in class programs, systems and processes, including training and coaching to establish clear procedures on SH&E measures and precautions. Directs certain company-wide functional SH&E programs and needs and acts as internal subject matter expert in those areas.
2. Facility/operations SH&E Staff support/coaching/feedback/development – Serve as NUSA SH&E counsel and leader for certain broad scope of manufacturing and/or distribution facilities. Provide training to, and regularly interact with, organizational leaders in SH&E and facility/functional leadership.
3. Compliance programs and support – Interpret, plan and ensure execution of compliance assurance processes (routines, self-assessments, audits) and ensure that corporate and all facilities are in compliance with company and regulatory agencies’ policies pertaining to SH&E.
4. NIMS –Ensure third party ISO certification of facilities. Develop tool, system and process knowledge capability for employees in area of responsibility. Works through and enhances established systems, applies related tools.
5. Liaison and technical expertise support – Provides technical expertise as needed in all areas and initiatives of the function. Assists facilities in partnering with other key functions on initiatives including legal, engineering, operations, quality, manufacturing excellence, etc.
6. Key Initiatives - In addition to overall input to corporate SH&E initiatives, strategies, programs and procedures, responsibilities include supporting facilities and groups (including other Nestlé Markets) via hands on counsel, supervision, assessment, team work, development and implementation of:
• SH&E audit programs (internal/external),
• ISO based management systems,
• Environmental Sustainability Programs
• EPA/OSHA/DOT and other regulatory requirements, enforcement and remedial actions, and internal programs and plans.
Travel required – average = 35-50% (up to 65% where employee is based remotely from Division)
REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL:
• Bachelors Degree in a scientific discipline or SH&E related field
• SH&E Professional Certification (CSP, CIH, CEM, etc.) strongly preferred
EXPERIENCE:
• Thorough and detailed knowledge and interpretive ability of state and federal safety/environmental regulations
• Minimum 5 years factory experience and/or division, regional, or corporate safety and environmental experience.
SKILLS:
• Strong communications, strategic, training, and motivational management and leadership skills.
• Good technical understanding of SH&E issues and their relationship to production/engineering and job functions as it relates to building in prevention.
• Demonstrated negotiation and influencing skills
• Must be capable of working in a fast paced environment with minimal direct supervision and have strong demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, and self-initiative skills.
• Strong demonstrated verbal / written communications, analytical and problem solving skills. Must be detailed and results oriented.
• Ability to communicate complex regulatory and technical issues in lay terms.
• Strong change management, team building abilities
• Ability to achieve results through dotted line situations
• Proficiency with Windows based applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Ability to master other specialized software.
