Job Description Nevada State University (NSU) invites applications for the position of Student Worker – RISE (Reaching Individuals through Student Engagement). Peer Mentors to serve, support and encourage new First Year student success. Peer Mentors play one of the most important roles at NSU by looking out for their fellow students and sharing insights about how they successfully navigated the social and academic atmosphere of NSU. RISE Peer Mentors lead mentees through New Student Orientation and Welcome Week, and help new students enjoy a successful first year at Nevada State. Through one-on-one and group meetings, RISE Peer Mentors will make a difference in the lives of their fellow students as a friendly and knowledgeable guide, a thoughtful facilitator who provides access to people and resources, and a role model and advocate. Core Responsibilities: Help mentees feel welcome and like a stronger part of the NSU community through regular contact and support interventions. Facilitate the adjustment of mentees and their guests to our campus and community through the introduction of campus services, academic resources, and campus involvement opportunities at New Student Orientation and First Year Fest. Provide support to mentees through the coordination and facilitation of monthly social, educational, and service programs. Serve as a positive academic and social role model. Be available as an ongoing resource for, and maintain regular contact with mentees through one-on-ones, email, text, phone calls, and social media outreach. Maintain confidentiality with any shared information. Communicate with the supervisor regarding any mentee concerns. Complete a periodic evaluation and meet with the supervisor to review development plan Minimum Qualifications: Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing and maintain a GPA of 2.75 or higher. If a student has or receives a GPA of 2.5-2.74, while serving as a mentor, they may be considered for or able to continue their employment, upon committing to an academic agreement as determined by supervisor. Must be enrolled as a degree seeking student with a minimum of 6 credits in the current or upcoming semester at NSU. Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (NSU does not sponsor employment-related visas). Must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours at NSU. Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills. Possess an eagerness to guide and support a diverse group of fellow students. Be creative and demonstrate personal initiative. Work Hours: Hours will vary throughout academic year. Mentors will average 10 hours per week. Student employees can work up to 19.5 hours per week. Mentors will be required to wear an issued Peer Mentor uniform during all Orientation sessions Mentors will be required to attend an assigned CEP/ALS class twice a month. Mentors must be able to complete the following: All scheduled Orientation sessions, mandatory training sessions, inclusive of self-assessment evaluation RISE Peer Mentor retreat, NASPA certified peer educator meetings Hourly Rate: $11.25 per hour.
