Primary Purpose:
To provide a developmental physical education program for all identified students, enabling them to participate successfully in the most integrated setting possible while facilitating the development of motor skills, fostering social experiences, and promoting a safe, healthy lifestyle. Serve as a member of the multidisciplinary evaluation and planning team who determines eligibility for special education services.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certification in the area of physical education
Valid Texas teaching certification in the area of special education
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Adapted physical education program design, planning, development, implementation, and evaluation
Ability to modify physical education curriculum based on individual student need
Basic knowledge of motor development and biomechanics
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
At least one year of student teaching or approved internship
Experience working with students with various disabilities
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Adapted PE Services
- Plan and provide adapted physical education services consistent with adapted PE goals contained in student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
- Evaluate student progress and determine readiness for termination of adapted PE services.
- Develop activity modifications and/or alternative activities for individual students; provide equipment needed to execute these modifications or alternative activities.
- Collaborate with general education physical education teachers to ensure student success through use of modifications and program planning.
- Provide general education physical education teachers with updated medical information and restrictions as needed, and address mobility and safety issues within the PE setting.
Assessment
- Assess students with disabilities, and determine eligibility for services.
- Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with the interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students according to district procedures.
Consultation
- Consult with educational staff and parents regarding adapted physical education services.
- Provide staff development training in assigned school(s) to assist personnel with implementation of curriculum modifications.
- Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.
Student Management
- Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level, interests, and needs of the students.
- Provide structure and establish control of student behavior to effectively implement IEP goals and objectives.
Program Management
- Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the adapted physical education program, and implement changes based on the findings.
- Assist in the selection of equipment and materials needed for students/program.
- Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and those in a supervisory position.
Special Olympics
- All duties as Head of Delegation for the District.
- Organize Special Olympics training sessions/practices.
- Lead Special Olympics training sessions/practices across the district.
- Manage athletes at training sites and ensure safety.
- Coordinate Special Olympics events such as end of year banquet, field day(s), presentations etc.
Administration
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records and other documentation required according to mandated federal timelines and district policy.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy.
- Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.

Motion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchairs or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities. Transferring of equipment to various campuses.
Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; occasional districtwide travel
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
