Role Overview:
The Facility Custodian is responsible for day-to-day facility housekeeping and janitorial tasks in an office building and adult day program. In addition, the Facility Custodian assists with groundskeeping, landscaping and weather-related tasks as needed. The Facility Custodian consistently supports the philosophy and core values of New Hope of Indiana.
Primary Role Responsibilities:
The following major functions describe the essential duties of this job classification. Individual positions may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform additional related tasks not listed here depending on the assigned site.
- Performs any routine and non-routine tasks related to cleaning and sanitizing an office building and adult day program as assigned.
- Cleans offices, common areas and bathrooms as directed.
- Maintains floors including stripping, waxing, mopping and buffing. Vacuums carpeted offices and other areas.
- Cleans/sanitizes bathrooms and restocks supplies.
- Collects and disposes of trash and recycling from grounds, offices, and common areas.
- Promptly identifies and reports possible maintenance issues and/or needed repairs to supervisor.
- Moves and assembles furniture and equipment as needed.
- Performs groundskeeping and landscaping responsibilities, such as planting and trimming shrubs and flowers, as needed.
- Shovels snow and treats walkways during inclement weather as needed.
- Performs minor plumbing tasks, such as unclogging toilets and sinks, as necessary.
- Maintains appropriate inventory of supplies and equipment, ensuring they are always clean and in good repair.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Required Experience and Qualifications:
Education and Experience: High school graduate preferred. Must have experience in custodial or janitorial work. Non-profit experience, as well as experience with individuals with disabilities, is strongly preferred.
Personal Skills and Aptitudes: Must be willing and able to clean up after others without judgement or bias. Must be able to carry out assignments in a timely manner with little to no direct supervision. Must be able to read, speak and communicate effectively to be understood by individuals who may have communication deficits and by associates with whom they communicate. Must have timely and reliable transportation to and from work. Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen. Must be comfortable having frequent contact with people with disabilities.
Work Schedule and Location: To be determined, but primarily daytime hours and weekdays. Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings, nights and weekends, as scheduled. Duties will be performed in our main office location.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to operate manual and power janitorial equipment, including a floor buffer, carpet cleaner, vacuum, etc. Must be able to clean up spills and bodily fluids. Perform physical acts such as climbing a ladder to clean or dust, mopping floors, operating a vacuum, washing walls, etc, in addition to lifting and moving furniture and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Will perform frequent and repetitive movements such as standing, walking, grasping, bending, pushing, pulling, squatting, reaching and twisting. Will occasionally work outdoors and in weather extremes as needed.
