Under general supervision, provides academic and personal support for participants of the Student Support Services program. Advises and counsels students regarding educational and career goals. Provides academic support to students; advises and registers students for classes; prepares degree plans for students; provides transfer counseling to four-year universities. Monitors students’ academic progress; creates individual student success plans with program participants; connects students to tutoring services as needed. Documents academic records, visits, and all contact with program participants, parents, teachers, and tutors. Recruits new students; holds group meetings and provides a program overview to students and parents; interviews individual students and assists with filling out initial paperwork. Enters student and parent information data for Federal Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); assists students with obtaining and completing FAFSA paperwork and applications. Participates in organizing and planning educational and cultural trips and workshops; chaperones trips as needed; may be required to work after hours and travel when necessary. Collects statistical information and data on previous students; reports analysis on an organized spreadsheet for Federal reports. Performs other duties as assigned or required. Nothing contained herein shall limit the President in assigning the employee to any of the various college activities for which he/she would be qualified in order to meet the needs of New Mexico Junior College.Bachelor’s degree required. Two (2) years of experience in academic advising/ counseling in a college level institution; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. May require possession of a valid Texas or New Mexico driver’s license. Knowledge of College and department policies and procedures. Knowledge of FAFSA requirements and application processes. Knowledge of grant requirements and policies. Skill in strategic planning and budget management. Skill in records management. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Ability to operate a personal computer, standard software, some specialized software, and standard office equipment. Ability to maintain accurate and organized records and filing systems.
