Classification Summary:
Provides instruction for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Basic program college course for New Mexico State University – Alamogordo.
Classification Standard Duties:
1. Collaborates with the Director of Allied Health and the University of New Mexico EMS staff in preparing and delivering course content.
2. Supervises the activities of course participants during instructional time in the classroom setting and clinical sites.
3. Evaluates learner performance, provides feedback, and develops learner remediation plans.
4. Administrative requirements, to include calculation and submission of grades, student/participant records, and preparation and submission of required documentation.
5. Participates in continuing professional development programs as appropriate.
6. Adheres to established University and departmental policies and procedures and relevant quality and safety standards.
7. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
• High school diploma or GED and successful completion of an EMS Academy-approved EMS instructor course and teaching internship, or equivalent; at least 3 years of EMS experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure NM licensure as EMT-Intermediate or Paramedic.
• Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Minimum of twenty-four (24) hours of college credit.
• Twenty-one (21) years or older
• Clinical experience
• Two (2) years relevant teaching experience
• Current NM EMS license held above the level being taught
• EMS Instructor teaching methodology course (minimum of 40 hrs) plus an 80-hour teaching internship
• Above average demonstration of the knowledge and skills for the EMS licensure level being taught

• Ability to adapt EMS curricula to reflect State requirements, local needs, and national trends.
• Knowledge of the delivery of emergency medical services in the State of New Mexico
• Knowledge of adult learning theory and methodologies.
• Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills.
• Knowledge of competency-based education principles and methods.
• Ability to assess student performance and progress and to provide appropriate feedback.
• Ability to promote higher-order thinking and problem-solving among educational participants.
• Ability to adhere to established standards for educational quality.
• Ability to maintain complete, accurate educational records.
• Knowledge of EMS educational program accreditation processes and standards.
• Knowledge of State of New Mexico EMS Bureau rules and regulations.
