DESCRIPTION:
New Virginia Majority is looking to hire a full-time Community Organizing Director. This position reports to the Co-Executive Director. The Community Organizing Director helps coordinate and guide issue campaigns in areas of immigrant rights, living wage policies, criminal justice reform, environmental justice policies and housing justice policies. Though often linked with electoral work, community organizing is focused on identifying, recruiting and developing leaders, building power, and winning issue campaigns through direct action.
NVM is organizing in Hampton Roads, the Richmond area and Northern Virginia. The Organizing Director oversees the work of a 12 member organizing team. A successful applicant will have experience in developing, managing and winning issue campaigns centered on the leadership of working class people of color. We are looking for someone who has experience in launching and winning issue campaigns with working class people of color, managing organizers, developing staff, and can support organizers in developing strategic and tactical plans.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead New Virginia Majority's statewide community organizing, including supervising community organizers, and guiding campaigns, and mobilizations to build leaders, power and win victories led by and benefiting working class communities of color in Virginia.
- Provide regular supervision to a diverse team of community organizers - some of whom work partially remote - through individual and group meetings, regular communication, shadowing, coaching and intentional training.
- Support actions, trainings, and mobilization opportunities in order to develop leaders and staff.
- Provide the necessary guidance and strategic thinking to support our team of community organizers to ensure they have the skills and tools necessary to carry out the work.
- Develop the political consciousness, skills and impact of organizers through political education,skill workshops, and one-on-one meetings.
- Provide support to lead organizers, organizers and members/leaders.
- Participate in campaign development- strategy and implementation.
- Participate in building campaign coalitions and key relationships with campaign-related allies.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Committed to New Virginia Majority’s mission of social, racial and economic justice.
- 4 or more years of paid relevant experience
- Demonstrated track record of building relationships across lines of difference and in building up the leaders of others.
- At least 3 years experience supervising diverse community organizers
- At least 5 years direct community organizing experience with experience in most aspects of direct action & issue campaign development and implementation.
- Experience building issue campaign coalitions with allied organizations.
- Ability to think both ‘marco’ (big picture, long-term issue based campaign strategy) as well as ‘micro’ (helping community organizers think through the daily tasks to engage leaders)
- Capacity to think strategically and analytically about social, economic, cultural, and political issues affecting communities.
- Self-motivated and works well both independently and on a team.
- Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, manage multiple projects.
- Ability to take direction and constructive feedback.
- Driver’s license and access to a car.
- A minimum one-year commitment to the position.
- Strong communication skills. Spanish language skills a plus.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Salaries are competitive. Salary is $85,000 - $100,000, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits package, including medical, vision, dental, and stipends for phone and transportation.
