High School English Teacher Job Description
Summary: New West Charter is an award-winning 6-12th grade independent charter school in Los Angeles, California. Our school attracts a diverse student population from all over the area, focuses on academics, and builds confidence through the arts and athletics.
We have an immediate opening to take over our 11th grade American Literature course. The ideal candidate would be a highly qualified and experienced teacher who is ready to lead 3 periods of college prep American Literature and 2 periods of Honors American Literature ELA. We’re looking for candidates that teach using a wide variety of inclusive literature that examines topics from different perspectives and critical lenses in alignment with the California Content Standards and our DEI Initiatives. All teachers at New West have a weekly Advisory class with curriculum provided.
Our school values student-centered learning. Teachers are expected to engage students in lessons that help them make meaning for themselves through classroom activities (demonstrations, simulations, labs, discussions, debates), assignments (creative projects and evidence-based persuasive papers), and assessments (multiple formative and summative assessments to measure progress towards mastery).
Reporting Responsibilities: Reports directly to the High School Principal
Performance Objectives:
Connects with individual students quickly and is able to establish a personal and meaningful relationship. Teachers must be able to develop a relationship built on understanding, trust, mutual respect. We are looking for people that truly care about their students beyond the school day.
Able to correctly identify strengths and weaknesses in students using a variety of means. Teachers must be able to use data and other indicators to identify patterns of achievement or challenges and then work with students to develop and implement successful strategies to improve their learning.
Effectively communicates and works productively with a wide range of people for the success of their students. A student’s team may consist of school administrators, faculty members, special education teammates, parents, lawyers, the student themselves, and other specialists working together for the benefit of the child.
Successfully manages many tasks at once. Teacher is responsible for supervising students in and out of the classroom, monitoring engagement time, checking their quality of their work, grading/entering assignments, and participating in a variety of meetings. Applicants must be able to oversee many aspects of the position with great attention to detail and a willingness to go above and beyond in all aspects of the position.
Provides engaging and challenging instruction to all students. A great teacher is able to use a variety of instructional and assessment styles to ensure that students are not only engaged with the curriculum, but are also held responsible for their learning. The ability to differentiate instructional methods and materials to match their student’s abilities and interests is a must.
