High School English Teacher Job Description

Summary: New West Charter is an award-winning 6-12th grade independent charter school in Los Angeles, California. Our school attracts a diverse student population from all over the area, focuses on academics, and builds confidence through the arts and athletics.

We have an immediate opening to take over our 11th grade American Literature course. The ideal candidate would be a highly qualified and experienced teacher who is ready to lead 3 periods of college prep American Literature and 2 periods of Honors American Literature ELA. We’re looking for candidates that teach using a wide variety of inclusive literature that examines topics from different perspectives and critical lenses in alignment with the California Content Standards and our DEI Initiatives. All teachers at New West have a weekly Advisory class with curriculum provided.

Our school values student-centered learning. Teachers are expected to engage students in lessons that help them make meaning for themselves through classroom activities (demonstrations, simulations, labs, discussions, debates), assignments (creative projects and evidence-based persuasive papers), and assessments (multiple formative and summative assessments to measure progress towards mastery).

Reporting Responsibilities: Reports directly to the High School Principal

Performance Objectives:

Connects with individual students quickly and is able to establish a personal and meaningful relationship. Teachers must be able to develop a relationship built on understanding, trust, mutual respect. We are looking for people that truly care about their students beyond the school day.

Able to correctly identify strengths and weaknesses in students using a variety of means. Teachers must be able to use data and other indicators to identify patterns of achievement or challenges and then work with students to develop and implement successful strategies to improve their learning.

Effectively communicates and works productively with a wide range of people for the success of their students. A student’s team may consist of school administrators, faculty members, special education teammates, parents, lawyers, the student themselves, and other specialists working together for the benefit of the child.

Successfully manages many tasks at once. Teacher is responsible for supervising students in and out of the classroom, monitoring engagement time, checking their quality of their work, grading/entering assignments, and participating in a variety of meetings. Applicants must be able to oversee many aspects of the position with great attention to detail and a willingness to go above and beyond in all aspects of the position.

Provides engaging and challenging instruction to all students. A great teacher is able to use a variety of instructional and assessment styles to ensure that students are not only engaged with the curriculum, but are also held responsible for their learning. The ability to differentiate instructional methods and materials to match their student’s abilities and interests is a must.

Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible to implement and follow all school policies and procedures, including but not limited to the following:

Curriculum, Instructional, and Additional Employee Duties

  • Establishes and maintains a safe learning environment for all students.
  • Creates a variety of engaging lessons, activities, and assessments for assigned seminar classes
  • Explains school and state graduation requirements to students/parents
  • Provides parents and students information about progress and the resources that we offer students
  • Works with students to differentiate instruction and uses a variety of strategies to ensure student achievement
  • Develops, revises, and implements new curriculum in an effort
  • Plans, implements and coordinates instructional goals, activities, and lessons with students
  • Meets with struggling students individually to discuss progress and adjust teaching methods whenever necessary to help the student make progress towards their graduation and post-high school goals
  • Reviews, grades, and enters student scores in a timely fashion
  • Regularly maintains their electronic grade book for accuracy and updates at least once a week
  • Communicates (in person, email, phone, video conference) in a timely manner with all stakeholders regarding announcements, important school dates, concerns or congratulations, standardized test dates, assignment deadlines to students/parents, answers to student/parent questions, etc.
  • Documents every important student/parent meeting
  • Submits work samples and attendance records to the office within timelines established
  • Maintains all required records in an organized, efficient, and professional manner
  • Initiates the SST process when significant areas of concern warrant doing so
  • Attends SST, 504 and IEP meetings and documents students’ present levels of performance

Professional Activities and Growth

  • Participates in curriculum development, materials selection, staff development, staff committees, and professional growth activities as directed
  • Promotes positive and effective school communication by ensuring that all interactions with staff, students, parents, and the public at large are prompt, efficient, helpful and friendly
  • Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service activities provided by the school and in self-selected professional growth activities as approved

Qualifications:

Training, Education and Experience

  • A valid California single subject teaching credential within the content area of ELA
  • CLAD Certification.
  • Must have knowledge of standards based curriculum, behavior management techniques, record keeping, student assessment, planning for individual student learning needs, and child development
  • Understands the overall dynamics of the program including school procedures, paperwork and legal requirements and compliance, and scope of curriculum resources

Technical Skills

  • Have the ability to act as teacher, counselor, coach, mentor, student advocate
  • Have working knowledge of Chromebook OS, G Suite (docs, slides, sheets,Classroom etc), internet browsing, email, and be able to troubleshoot minor problems for each.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret student performance data
  • Communicate effectively in written and oral forms including email and other electronic tools
  • Ability to write reports, and to effectively present information and respond to questions from parents, staff, students and the general public
  • Effectively use school data systems (Accelerate Learning, Infinite Campus, etc) for tracking student progress including grades and attendance
  • Ability to adapt instruction to individual student abilities needs
  • Expertise in curriculum and instructional strategies for differentiated instruction

Miscellaneous

  • Must pass FBI/DOJ Background/Fingerprint test, TB Test

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: $51,000.00 - $97,169.00 per year
