Job Description
Purpose:
Under the general direction of the Director, assigns, plans, directs, implements and evaluates nursing care on an ongoing basis; demonstrates leadership that is self directing, creative and innovative with an ability to function effectively in stressful situations; is tactful, relates effectively to and works with through individuals with diverse backgrounds.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
These technical procedures include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Assesses and monitors patients conditions and initiates appropriate nursing intervention including direct patient care.
2. performs the duties described in the generic Head Nurse job description.
3. Initiates and maintains a system of communication with staff on a 24 hour basis.
4. Interprets, implements and enforces hospital and nursing policies; acts to resolve problems and grievances; makes referrals to service Director if necessary.
5. In collaboration with the Director of Service, plans and implements an orientation for new staff.
6. Assists in planning, directing, providing and evaluating patient teaching.
7. Assures proper utilization of supplies and equipment; orders supplies as needed.
8. Participates and encourages staff participation in the review of current data relative to clinical practice.
9. Coordinates staff time planning with staffing Director.
10. Serves as a resource person to nursing staff and assumes responsibility for the management of several units as designated on weekends/holidays and off tours.
11. Participates in P.I., Discharge planning and JCAHO activities.
12. Attends/participates in continuing education programs.
13. Makes assignments of staff based on patient acuity and competencies of staff.
14. Provides direct care to patients in the following age group: Geriatric, middle adult and young adult.
Minimum Qualifications
For individuals holding an unrestricted registered professional nursing license BEFORE July 1,
2020 in New York State, another state or United States territory:
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse
in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life
Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse.
For individuals issued a registered professional nursing license on or AFTER July 1, 2020,
based on expected implementation of Chapter 502 of the Laws of 2017 and Chapter 380 of the
Laws of 2018:
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional
Nurse in New York State; and
a. A Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing or higher (or other nursing degree, as identified by NYS
Education Department including Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of
Philosophy Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Science) from an accredited college or
university, registered with the NYSED; or
b. Obtains a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing or higher, as described in “a” above, within ten
(10) years of the date of initial licensure; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life
Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse.
