Summary
Program components include tutoring, academic and personal counseling, peer support groups, topic workshops, local and out-of-state trips, athletic and artistic activities designed to prepare participants for timely graduation from high school, and success in college. The program also focuses on developing a positive and supportive youth culture that fosters unity and a stronger sense of self. The Success Mentor will manage a caseload of up to 25 students, and will be responsible for guiding students with a strong emphasis on attendance.
Major Duties:
Meet with students individually regularly and more frequently if the student demands more intensive support.- Plan and facilitate weekly team peer group meetings.
- Advocate for students to help resolve disciplinary problems or other concerns.
- Assist students in course selection and college planning. Support academic success through proper planning and college awareness.
- Serve as the primary day-to-day contact for parents, teachers, school officials, and other community stakeholders regarding questions, concerns, and requests about students. Initiate responses where appropriate, and ensure that relevant information is communicated to the Community School Director. Build positive relationships with parents and increase parental involvement through workshops and referrals to community services.
- Refer students to individual and group counseling where needed and work actively with team to respond to crisis situations. Provide follow up case management for youth and their families, as needed. Assist with parent meetings in family homes and at the program site, when necessary.
- Monitor and track daily, weekly and monthly attendance of students, and follow up with students to ensure that they are attending program regularly, and are continuously engaged to the program.
- Perform statistical, narrative, and record keeping duties as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required with preference in Social Work, Counseling, or Education.- At least 2 years of college experience in related field.
- At least two years’ experience in a youth development organization or high school setting in under served community; experience in a college preparation program is preferred.
- Solid understanding of youth development methodologies and a strength-based approach to assessment and counseling.
- Superior organizational, planning, and problem solving skills.
- Strong PC, Microsoft Office, and Internet skills.
- Must be available to work some Saturday hours.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and to work independently and creatively.
- Excellent interpersonal, relationship building, oral and written communication skills.
- Must have a commitment to working with youth from a strengths-based and/or youth development perspective.
Success Mentors will be required to report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents and school administration while following DOH Covid-19 guidelines such as wearing PPE and remaining socially distant.
At time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
