New York Edge is a non-profit organization and one of the largest providers of school-based afterschool programs in New York City and the metropolitan region serving over 25,000 elementary, middle, and high school students each year. The mission of New York Edge is to help bridge the opportunity gap among students in underinvested communities by providing programs designed to improve academic performance, health and wellness, self-confidence, and leadership skills for success in life.
Summary:
Activity Specialists facilitate service learning, prepare for lesson instruction following curriculum designed by NYE, attend trips, operate safe and engaging classrooms, focus on social emotional learning and cultural inclusivity and partner with the community on service based projects. They attend all professional development training offered, develop relationships for support from tutor counselors, and take part in project based lessons and NYE events. They provide feedback to meet NYE and funder requirements. Our Specialists are responsible for implementing lessons, projects and objectives that meet the individual students' needs. They foster an atmosphere of fun and learning and serve as a role model to youth, always conducting themself in the utmost professional manner and maintaining appropriate boundaries. They are also responsible for maintaining the target number of participants.
Guitar Instructor
The guitar instructor should have knowledge of child development, knowledge of current educational research in the field of music education and a basic understanding and knowledge of the instrument and current technology. The teacher should also be familiar with various learning styles and skills of teaching acoustic guitar. The guitar specialist is responsible for knowing the proper name of each part of a guitar, positioning the guitar, holding the pick, note names on the fretboard, how to strum, and so on. They want to implement good technique. The ability to demonstrate what you are teaching is key. You need to be able to play what you are teaching - cleanly, confidently, and at multiple tempos. The guitar specialist is responsible for planning and implementing the NYE curriculum which includes music appreciation, harmony, theory, and the historical and cultural aspects of music. Not only should the teacher define goals and objectives for the year, but should also sequence content, rehearsal and activities appropriately. Repertoire should be carefully selected by distinguishing the ability of the class and should reflect various genres and eras in musical composition. The guitar specialist should have good management skills in all areas of conducting and executing an overlaying showcase.
Essential Job Functions:
- Establish boundaries and community agreements for behavior and procedures for maintaining a safe and engaging classroom.
- Organize, lead, and promote interest in daily music activities such as worksheets, warm-up, and practice of playing, counting and rhythm, style and tempo as well as activities that lead to full performance pieces, trips to see shows and workshops outside the site to enhance and further learning.
- Organize performance groups, and direct their rehearsals, put on performances at the site and prepare to audition for the Annual NYE Spring Arts Showcase or any other NYE Art Events.
- Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students. This should be from the NYE music curriculum.
- Ascertain and interpret group interests, evaluate equipment and facilities, and adapt activities to meet the requirements of NYE along with the student's interests.
- Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
- Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in the activities, and demonstrate proper handling of instruments.
- Greet new arrivals to activities, introducing them to other students, explaining rules, and encouraging participation.
- Evaluate activity to determine if they are producing desired results.
- Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
- Progressive development of student skills leading to a final project
- Promotes positive character development in all youth
Required skills:
- Must be knowledgeable and skilled in guitar terminology and culture, have prior experience successfully teaching and instructing youth in this expertise.
- Must possess strong instructional skills and patience.
- Must have prior performance experience and stage/theater etiquette and understanding.
- Must have knowledge and prior experience putting a performance together.
- Must have knowledge in various musical eras, music history and resources to develop a well-rounded and cohesive study in music discussions throughout the school year.
- Must be responsible, reliable and punctual!
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma
- Minimum of two years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required.
- Must have passion for NYE mission and demonstrated interest in the field of education and youth development.
- Able to work late afternoons and/or evenings. After-School hours can span from 2:50pm-6:50pm, with most programs running from 3-6pm.
- Certifications and credentials in respective music study highly preferred.
- Candidates who are qualified to lead instruction in more than one activity preferred as well.
- Must pass pre-employment background investigation including but not limited to employment history and criminal background check
