Educational Interpreter (Pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval)
The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Educational Interpreter.
Qualifications
NJ Educational Services Certificate w/sign language interpreting endorsement.
EIPA Certification with a score of 3.0 or higher
Completion of the Educational Interpreter Training Classes including:
Ethics and Laws for Educational Interpreters
Methods of Instruction & Curriculum Development
Deaf-Blind interpreting for Educational Interpreters
Language Development for Educational Interpreters
Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college or university, those with performance route certification will also be considered
Ability to work effectively with parents, students, administrators and teachers
Ability to both produce accessible language and understand child and adolescent signers
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Fluency in written and spoken English
Fluency in various forms of communication including ASL or the sign mode determined by the educational team
Possess knowledge specific to language development of Deaf and hard of hearing children
Ability to work well with individuals from diverse cultures
Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
Responsibilities
Interpret, transliterate and otherwise facilitate the integration of Deaf and hard of hearing students, providing access to the curriculum in a mode that reflects the student's language use, as outlined in the student's IEP
Performs interpretation services for the Deaf and the hard of hearing students simultaneously and consecutively, in a variety of situations
Assists classroom teacher in the delivery of an effective instructional program
Work with individual hearing impaired students or small groups of hearing impaired student to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher
Guide independent study, enrichment work and remedial work assigned by the teacher to the student(s) with hearing loss.
Model social strategies to encourage interaction between individuals who use sign language and those who do not.
For those with the appropriate certification, performs oral interpretation; present spoken messages utilizing easily read, clear mouth movements, orally repeat the spoken message of the Deaf or hard of hearing individual to the hearing individual, if necessary
Interpret for individual or small groups of students and staff members with auditory disabilities in the classroom, field trips or at assembly programs
Assist the teacher of the deaf and supervisor of the auditory impairments program in exploring and identifying the communication needs of students with hearing loss
Provide assistance to the instructional leader in the appropriate use and care of classroom amplification systems which allow auditory access to those students capable of using residual hearing
Report the malfunction/inappropriate use of such equipment to the appropriate professionals for repair/reinstruction pertaining to said equipment
Assist students with hearing loss to master the use of amplification technology (personal hearing aids, personal & classroom assistive listening devices) and to independently advocate for the appropriate use of classroom accommodations
Assist with the supervision of deaf and hard of hearing students during emergency drills, assemblies and field trips
Read and adhere to the Registry of interpreter for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, school personnel, and agencies associated with the school
Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines
Uphold and enforces school rules, administrative regulations and Board of Education policies
Serve as a role model for students, dressing and grooming professionally, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibilities, and demonstrating pride in the profession of interpreting
Provide technical assistance in the development of workshops, seminars and other programs on the needs and cultural mediation of the Deaf and hard of hearing community
Participate in professional development for the maintenance of certification status
Provide interpreting services for staff members with hearing loss during designated staff development days as assigned
Perform other duties with the scope of his/her employment and certification as may be assigned by supervisor, administrator or his/her designee
