Summary
A corporate-wide position involving professional technical skill and/or judgment in areas involving an integration of science, legal requirements, operational activities and policy. The Environmental Coordinator is responsible for analysis, design, implementation and management of existing and new environmental programs, regulations and legislation to provide environmental support for business units in a proactive, cost-effective manner that is consistent with NiSource policy and business objectives. Responsibilities encompass a wide-range of environmental program areas including, but not limited to, air, water, natural resource and waste management in accordance with local, state and federal requirements. Responsibilities also include activities related to enhancing and maintaining the NiSource Environmental Management System including analyzing and managing data to direct and cause continuous improvement related to environmental performance and to enhance and maintain a process to track, monitor, communicate and minimize environmental related risk. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Promotes and assures safe working environment and public safety
- Utilizes existing systems, processes and procedures to identify and communicate opportunities for environmental related continuous improvement
- Integrate business and regulatory needs and coordinate with multiple levels and multiple business partners within the organization to utilize change management tools and skills to facilitate action planning
- Provides clear, concise and effective communication with business partners to keep leaders informed of performance status
- Coordinates with affected business partners to align business operational needs and constraints with efficient and effective environmental risk minimization and mitigation
- Analyzes and interprets environmental related rules, regulation, policies and guidelines as necessary to meet applicable requirements and/or corporate directives
- Prepares written summaries of environmental regulations and their impact on business operations
- Identifies, develops, enhances and implements compliant and proactive environmental systems and programs
- Prepares formal comments on proposed environmental regulations for submittal to state or federal agencies
- Acts as a company representative for interaction with regulatory agencies, inspections, etc.
- Works with diverse teams on program development in a wide range of environmental areas. Contribute to existing team activities in policy, sustainability, compliance, permitting and remediation
- Coordinates and/or perform required environmental activities necessary to ensure environmental programs and permits are properly implemented and attain 100% compliance
- Maintains a working knowledge of current environmental regulations and the regulatory process
- Manages budget and resources to deliver results on time and within budget
- Be a self-starter with a high degree of initiative and ability to work both independently and within a team
Required Qualifications for Position
Environmental Coordinator III
- Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Environmental Science, Engineering or related field. Equivalent work experience may be substituted
- A minimum of 5 - 8 years relevant experience
- Working knowledge of environmental air, water, natural resource and waste management requirements with ability to analyze environmental regulations, identify issues/opportunities, and communicate results
- Working knowledge of electric generation and natural gas operations and associated environmental regulations
- Self-directed aptitude and willing to contribute in a wide array of environmental disciplines
- Ability to work cooperatively and build consensus in a team environment and have a strong ability to work with and be a leader in diverse team settings
- Ability to use professional judgment and work in a self-directed manner with minimal direct supervision
- Well-developed analytical and communication skills
- Strong learning agility skills and able to adapt to a consistently changing environment
- Competent in the use of electronic spreadsheets and word processing software
- Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
- Approximately 5% travel
Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position
- Master’s Degree in Environmental related field
- Independently understand when to seek assistance from attorneys, other experts, government officials to assess and act on environmental circumstances
- Working knowledge of operations support systems (e.g. Maximo, Work Management, GIS, CIS)
- Working knowledge of principles of project management
- Experience managing third party consultants
