Reporting Relationships:
This position reports to the Director, IP.
This position directly supervises IP Paralegals, IP Specialists, IP Assistants, IP Docketing Staff and Prosecution Support Staff.
Location: Boston; Chicago; Los Angeles; San Francisco; Washington, DC.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage a team of IP professionals responsible for supporting the IP attorneys/agents and professional staff. Provide guidance, mentoring, and training to develop and retain top talent. Serve as an escalation point for the team.
- Coordinate staff workload allocation and assignments, manage work hours, and facilitate cross-office support.
- Collaborate with HR on performance management processes, including goal setting, performance reviews, compensation recommendations, and development plans. Escalate performance issues and manage improvement plans.
- Coordinate activities across roles within the team to increase overall group effectiveness and minimize duplication of efforts.
- Develop practice group quality control metrics and monitor for continuous improvement; ensure compliance with client and industry requirements.
- Provide reports and analytics for IP prosecution and litigation teams regularly; focusing on trends, statistics, and other relevant data related to productivity, volume, processing times, and client service.
- Facilitate training and development, both at the time of hire and on an ongoing basis, to ensure staff performs in alignment with the firm’s Behaviors and Skills.
- Integral part of the hiring process of the IP Staff. Work closely with the Director, IP and the recruiting team on updating job descriptions, reviewing and selecting candidates, and participate in the interview process.
- Provide project management leadership support for cross-office and cross-functional projects and initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with the Director, IP to ensure the strategic goals of the practice group are being met.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree is required. Experience in lieu of a degree will be considered.
- 7-10 years of experience in patent and trademark prosecution and litigation.
- 3-5 years of managerial/supervisory experience.
- Extensive knowledge of USPTO and international rules and procedures. In-depth knowledge of IP docketing procedures and software. Familiarity with Pattsy Wave a plus.
- Knowledge of United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) practices, procedures and products. This includes working experience with e-filing, Patent Center, and TSDR.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to gain the confidence and trust of attorneys and staff.
- Innovative, with a growth mindset, strong organizational and time management skills, and current knowledge of industry best practices.
- Ability to proficiently use Windows-based software applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and document management systems (i.e., NetDocuments).
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture that promotes excellence.
- Travel, as needed, among offices to perform role and to industry and firm-sponsored conferences and/or seminars.
In accordance with applicable Federal and State laws, the anticipated annual salary range for this position, depending on location, is as follows: Boston: $103,250 to $157,500; Chicago: $98,900 to $150,900; Washington, DC: $103,250 to $157,500; Los Angeles: $103,250 to $157,500; San Francisco: 107,550 to $164,050
In addition to a standard benefits package, this role may be eligible for additional contingent compensation based on an array of factors, including but not limited to: work performance, geographic location, work experience, education, and qualifications. Because such contingent compensation is not yet calculable or may be zero ($0) in some circumstances, the above-listed salary range is Nixon Peabody’s good faith estimate of the annual salary it reasonably expects to pay for the position at the time of this posting.
