Summary:
This Director, Engineering-Track Design role is responsible for overseeing railroad track design and contract document production for the in-house Rail Infrastructure unit of the Capital Engineering Department.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Serves as project director and directs all design staff activities, including contract document production for track and rail design. Reviews and approves all plans, specifications and calculations to ensure constructability and compliance with regulatory agency requirements and accepted engineering practice. Certifies designs are correct by signing and sealing contract documents in accordance with state statute.
Serves as in-house design expert answering questions and resolving problems encountered by other departments. Manages outside consultant design projects assigned to assist with design projects. Reviews and/or manages staff review of plans and specifications prepared by consultants for all construction projects.
Directs staff in the review and approval of shop drawings, product cut sheets, construction schedules, applications for payment, and other construction submittals. Directs Construction Managers on design issues and field modifications. Provides oversight of contractor progress and construction techniques. Reviews and approves construction change orders.
Establishes design parameters and develops conceptual track and rail infrastructure designs for rail facility capital projects. Prepares cost estimates, project budgets and construction schedules.
Resolves daily staff issues, assigns work, coordinates staff training, prepares merit reviews, interview/hire new employees. Responsible for the development of short and long-term department goals.

Qualifications:
Bachelors' Degree in Engineering and seven (7) years of progressive managerial applied experience in design and construction track and rail facilities.
Understanding of basic project management and staff management and advance understanding of railroad track design.
Professional Engineer license required.
Working Environment & Physical Demands:
90% Office/10% Field
Physical demands are typically indicative of an office environment and capable of hiking/light climbing for field visits. Visual inspection of facilities and facility components.
