Overview:
Utilize a broad range of experience and engineering principals to design and develop methods and procedures to characterize products and processes in the development of new products and in the support of existing products. Creativity and pragmatism are essential skills since standardized testing methods do not exist for these products. Work assigned to a Mechanical Engineer is generally complex and multi-disciplined.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Working alongside other team members, conceive new product designs based on product management input and on written product specifications. Provide concepts, preliminary cost estimates and plan development schedules for mechanical systems that meet customer requirements, time to market commitments and that are within target cost commitments of the project.
- Perform detailed analysis of the interaction of components and subsystems and their impact on overall system performance.
- Develop and execute test plans to validate system performance utilizing design for reliability (DFR) tools and performance sensitivity analysis.
- Drive the development and standardization of engineering test plans to validate new or existing mechanical system performance utilizing design for reliability tools and performance sensitivity analysis.
- Assist in the development of prototypes used for component and systems testing. Direct laboratory technicians throughout the development of mock-ups and throughout the evaluation process.
- Provide guidance for validation of products, test methods, and procedures.
- Assist Quality personnel with creation of calibration plans and procedures.
- Communicate and collaborate with technicians, engineers, managers, suppliers, and contractors.
- Provide technical support and perspective on cross-functional teams ensuring new products, product improvements, investigations, and CAPA’s can be realistically achieved.
- Prepare and deliver complex engineering-related reports and presentations, both internally and externally.
- Reviews and recommends changes to the product development process to reduce product development time and improve the overall quality of new products.
- Participates in reviewing the qualifications and recommendations for the hiring of new project personnel for R&D.
- Prepare, review, and support Intellectual Property submittals for all engineering disciplines.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires a minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in a product development engineering role
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in automation design and development
- Understanding of fluid flow, heat transfer, vaporization, DC power control, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Comprehension of Quality Management System (QMS) requirements in a regulated environment (FDA/Health Canada/MHRA/etc.). Medical device quality systems or CTP requirements experience is desirable.
- Experience designing and qualifying plastic molded parts and metal casting parts preferred.
- Experienced using DFMEA, DFM, DFT methods
- Sound knowledge of statistics and their application to product and process design and control.
- Ability to assess complex data objectively and to make scientifically sound decisions in an efficient manner and to effectively present complex data in a format which supports the conclusion.
- Works effectively with global cross-functional teams during all phases of the toll gate development process.
- Strong critical thinking skills
- Efficient organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple processes and priorities effectively.
- Excellent communications skills both written and oral, including ability to navigate potentially challenging situations both internal and external to the business.
- Ability to quickly assess assigned task requirements, identify potential challenges, and communicate effectively in order to expedite the successful execution of assigned work.
- Ability to work independently and within team environments.
- Strong computer skills, i.e. Excel/Word/PowerPoint/Visio, Statistical Software such as Minitab or Statistics, etc.
- Fluent in CAD software, preferably SolidWorks
- Strong GD&T experience
- Experience using and implementing modularity and standardization principles
- Other duties may be assigned as necessary
