JOB SUMMARY: The Safety Management System Coordinator assists the Operations Manager in developing, implementing, and administering the Safety Management System as outlined in 14CFR Part 139, Subpart E. This position will assist with responsibilities for ensuring the company meets all safety standards and regulations, identifies, and mitigates potential risks, and fosters a culture of safety throughout the organization and affiliated partners.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The following duties are typical for this position. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Depending on assignment, the employee is required to walk, stand, bend, stoop, squat, and kneel, which may involve some combination of lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling objects and materials of moderate weight up to 50 lbs.

- Development, implementation, and maintenance of the Safety Management System (SMS) in accordance with industry standards and regulatory requirements specifically used for Airports.
- Conduct risk assessments and identify potential hazards within the organization and related properties.
- Monitor that procedures / processes are aligned with company policies and regulatory compliance.
- Maintain accurate records, reports and procedures related to safety incidents, inspections, training and produce various reports to management as required.
- Provide safety training and education to employees, tenants and contractors of the Airport.
- Effectively collaborate with department leadership to ensure safety considerations are integrated into current and future business practices and initiatives.
- Investigates accidents, incidents and near misses to determine cause and possible corrective actions and provide report summary to management for action.
- Develop training initiatives to be used in the development, implementation, and management of SMS.
- Produce and lead safety briefings, meetings and presentations related to SMS.
- Implement technology and automation into initiatives that use SMS throughout the company.
- Perform periodic monitoring and data collection for hazard potential and identification.
- Assist in the promotion design and implementation plan of the SMS throughout the organization.
- Performs all other duties as assigned and directed.
- Adhere to all Authority personnel policies and departmental guidelines.
- Thorough knowledge of 14 CFR Part 139, Subpart E - Safety Management Systems.
- Ability to effectively utilize technology devices to efficiently give presentations, produce/review documents, and conduct investigations.
- Maintain accurate electronic files, records and cost control programs to meet departmental requirements.
- Demonstrate creative ability to develop new and innovative processes and procedures.
- Exhibit strong communication skills in both written and verbal form.
- Demonstrate keen listening skills and seek to understand the perspectives of others to gain knowledge.
- Ability to work cooperatively with other Airport Authority personnel, tenants and outside agencies.
- Ability to produce professional documents, presentations, reports, and manuals intended for training and presentations to senior leadership.
- Prioritize day-to-day activity with limited supervision and meet complex, time sensitive tasks.
- Work both independently and in team settings efficiently and professionally with productive results.
- Advanced computer skills
- Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, industrial engineering, or a related field with (3) years of relevant work experience.
- Previous SMS development experience, preferred.
- Program design and implementation experience preferred.
- Project Manager, Safety Manager / Director experience, preferred.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), preferred.
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP), preferred.
- Occupational Health and Safety General Industry (OSHA 30-hour) certification, preferred.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and must meet NAA driving record requirements.
- Ability to obtain and maintain eligibility to hold a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge as may be required by assigned job duties and responsibilities.
- Operate computer/tablets using Internet/Intranet access as daily business tools.
- Operate pickup trucks with 4-wheel drive, towing package and snowplow equipment.

Working Conditions/Hazards
- May include adverse environmental conditions including heat, cold, rain, snow. Slippery conditions exist while getting into and out of airport vehicles and other areas of the airport.
- Extensive working hours during heavy weather events.
- License is active and NOT suspended.
- Any employee or applicant who has been licensed in their state for less than 3 years must provide a copy of their previous driving record to Human Resources.
- An employee or applicant may have a North Carolina or Virginia driver’s license as long as they reside in that state.
- An “unacceptable" DMV driving record includes the following violations during the most recent 3-year period:
