Dates and times are dependent upon program assignment(s).
Note: Current employees cannot receive pay for any summer school work until after their contract for their work days for the current school year have expired. Current employees with questions about their last work day should contact their HR Generalist for confirmation.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must possess an active Virginia unrestricted Registered Nurse License through the Department of Health Professionals Virginia Board of Nursing.
- Current CPR certification for health care providers required.
Nature of Position
The school nurse provides assessments and diagnosis of students in the school setting. An employee in this position is responsible for is responsible for administering medication and providing skill and emergency care for students, staff, and guests during school hours.
Examples of Duties
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
- Interpret school health services to stakeholders.
- Conduct nursing assessments and diagnosis for students.
- Administration of medication to students.
- Plan, implement, and supervise the school health screening programs in accordance with the state and district mandates.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of student growth, development, and age-appropriate behaviors and expectations.
- Knowledge of state health regulations.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of various methods of data collection, subsequent analysis, and interpretation of the data to drive appropriate healthcare decisions.
- Knowledge or experience with care plans, Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and/or 504 plans.
- Ability to function independently in a school clinic and make sound clinical judgments.
- Ability to interact effectively with students, staff, administrators, parents, and community.
