Job Location Clayton, NC Department Central Crops Research Station About the Department The mission of the Central Crops Research Station is to provide resources, personnel, scientific expertise, and facilities to scientists conducting research in field crops, horticulture crops, swine, tobacco, and environmental areas.

It is the responsibility of the staff to actively manage and maintain all projects and to develop long and short-term management schemes.

The research includes multi-discipline research projects, complex breeding programs, leaf and soil microbes, insect and disease control, irrigation, fertility, weed management, plasticulture, pesticide application, tolerance, and efficacy.

The station houses a maize seed lab, seed processing area, and long- term seed storage facility. It functions as a teaching facility for both graduate and undergraduate students at NC State by providing crop field labs for graduate and undergraduate classes.

The station hosts numerous demonstrations, workshops, field days, and instructional programs for the public each year. Essential Job Duties This position is responsible for overseeing the swine unit including care of animals and facilities, instructing staff and students in swine unit activities, and conducting general research project support for the station.

The validity of the research is dependent upon a high level of attention to detail by all station personnel.

Duties include :

  • Assessing proposed project requirements for station and unit resources and evaluating long-term effects on both.
  • Assisting with all tasks related to the establishment, maintenance, and disposition of animal specimens and waste management system
  • Assisting research personnel with assigning animals, implementation of treatments, and collection and recording of data.
  • Applying treatments to research subjects according to protocol including water, feed, research inputs, and medicines
  • Operating the effluent management system.
  • Daily animal care including feeding, watering, and monitoring and assessment of well-being in accordance with standard operating procedures

In the absence of active swine studies or based on overall station needs, this position will be required to assist with the maintenance of equipment, grounds, buildings, field plots, and other tasks.

This position is located in Clayton, NC Other Responsibilities Assist project staff on research programs in field crops (tobacco, small grains, corn, cotton, soybean, and horticultural and specialty crops.

Additional work hours may be required for animal care and during planting, irrigation and harvest seasons. Research projects or weather may alter work schedule.

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of agricultural practices related to crop and livestock production with research experience.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds on a routine basis and up to 90 pounds on occasion, and perform long periods of repetitive reaching, stooping, standing, bending, and lifting, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to operate machinery associated with livestock and crop production.
  • Ability to communicate in both oral and written form; ability to read and follow pesticide labels and research protocols.
  • Ability to collect and record data accurately.
  • Ability and willingness to work in all environments at the station to perform tasks as assigned

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and / or knowledge of research program methods, principles, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Advanced understanding in a research, commercial, or educational setting of swine husbandry.
  • Knowledge of animal waste water regulations and experience with effluent application system.
  • Animal Waste Water Applicator, ICUC, and Pork Quality Assurance experience.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of agricultural practices related to crop and livestock production.
  • Experience operating and adjusting farm equipment including calibration.

Required License or Certification

  • Must have a valid NC driver’s license or ability to obtain within 60 days of start date.
  • Must obtain an NC Public Pesticide applicators license and Waste Water Applicator Swine Certification, a Medical Respirator Certification, and an NCDA forklift driver license within the first six months of hire date.
  • Licenses and certifications must be maintained as a condition of employment.
