CREC Livestock Research Technician

This position is a 100% research technician position at an agricultural research center (Carrington, ND) livestock program. Participation in research trials involving beef cattle, including data and sample collection, diet formulation, feeding management, and animal husbandry is expected. Training and assisting graduate and undergraduate students, supervising hourly labor, and collaborating with other research faculty and technicians to conduct program related research is expected. This position also carries responsibilities for physically feeding and caring for livestock during both routine animal husbandry practices and research activities and operation and maintenance of equipment and facilities improvements.

Position requires diverse skills with major responsibilities to include animal care and handling including weighing and vaccinations, preparation of feed rations, feed delivery, assisting cows with birthing, collecting research data, operating all equipment and addressing facility needs such as maintaining water supply, pen structures, tree rows, and facility repairs.

The Carrington Research Extension Center is one of seven out-state NDSU Research Extension Centers. The CREC is located near Carrington, a community centrally located about two hours from each of the four largest cities in North Dakota. Carrington is a thriving community of approximately 2,500 people in a widely diversified agricultural production region of east central North Dakota. Carrington is a vibrant rural community with progressive schools (K-12), modern medical services (clinic and hospital), and recreation opportunities including hunting, fishing and birding. Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years’ hands-on experience in livestock production, management and care.
  • Experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of feedlot equipment.
  • Experience with administering vaccinations, related animal health inputs and procedures.
  • Computer experience, including working with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to work extended days and select weekends along with maintaining consistent work schedule.
  • Good oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Greater than three years’ experience of direct participation in livestock production and management.
  • Experience with assisting cows at calving and calf care.
  • Experience with livestock research procedures and trial management.
  • Experience with equipment operation including hay and forage harvest.
  • Prior experience with carpentry, welding, grounds work, or similar skilled work.
