Biology Instructor

Category/Level: Faculty (9-month contract)

Basic Function: Provide effective instruction in all assigned areas, including Introductory Biology courses. Participate in assessment and periodic review of instructional programs. Maintain current course syllabi and outlines. Prepare and submit all required reports related to the instructional task. Assist in the budgeting process and scheduling of classes as requested by the Division Chair. Participate in department, division, and college-wide meetings and committees. Collaborate with other faculty/staff and administration to assist in recruitment activities and retention as designated to promote the development of the total College.

Qualifications:

Required: Master's degree in Biology or a Master's degree with 12 graduate credits in Biology.

Preferred: Previous collegiate teaching experience with well-developed teaching skills and commitment to the comprehensive community college philosophy.

Start Date: August 2024

Responsibilities & Duties:
1. Prepare for and deliver instruction and perform teaching-related activities. Teaching assignments may include evening courses and teaching via alternative delivery systems such as online and off-campus.
2. Plan, implement, and sponsor appropriate activities to supplement instruction based on Quality Matters standards and sound instructional design principles.
3. Assist in selecting textbooks, developing/updating curricula, completing reports, tracking/reporting assessment data, and complete program review/strategic planning requirements.
4. Evaluate, record, and report attendance. Assess student performance and advise students on academic issues.
5. Attend departmental and institutional meetings. Participate, as possible, in professional development activities at the college and within state and regional organizations. Serve actively on institutional committees.
6. Schedule biannual meetings with the Advisory Committee. Assume responsibility for equipment inventory. Assist the supervisor in the development of a proposed program budget.
7. Promote the education/training program, participate in efforts to recruit and retain students, and participate in efforts to market NIACC. Assist with the program marketing and recruitment of students for the program.
8. Support student organizations and activities.
9. Maintain skills in teaching methods, course development, and professional development as recommend by Division Chair and Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Learning (VPAASL). Prepare annual Quality Faculty Plan and execute personal development program to enhance course content knowledge and teaching effectiveness skills.
10. Maintain records and files as requested by the department and/or VPAASL. Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Division Chairperson and the VPAASL, relating to the best interest of the program and student success.
11. Establish and maintain effective professional relationships with staff, students, faculty, and other NIACC stakeholders.
12. Arrive on time for work, attend work regularly, and successfully complete the responsibilities of the position.
13. Attentive to detail, accurately follow written and oral instructions, and work independently. Communicate effectively with individuals from diverse ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, gender, and disabilities populations.
14. Physical requirements include excellent verbal and communication skills, ability to understand words and respond effectively and appropriately, visual acuity to view a computer terminal, ability to use appropriate judgment and to apply tact and courtesy in difficult situations.
Perform in a manner which strengthens the coordination and cooperation of all organizational components of the College, including opportunities for student recruitment.
