Position Summary

Create a vibrant learning space in the Middle School’s Library Media Center. Plan, organize and implement the instructional programs aligned to the District’s Core Values, and Mission, creating a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential and access their chosen path. Run the daily circulation management for the Media Center, supervises students using the Media Center, help with location of materials for students and staff, processes materials, etc. Assume responsibility for the direction of the media center, but must be able to discriminate between legitimate decisions to be made and those to be referred to the building principal. Establish relationships with students, parents, and colleagues to foster a sense of belonging and community.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Educational Background
    • High School Diploma or equivalent by OAR 581-37-030
    • Two years of post-secondary study, or
    • An Associate's degree or higher, or
    • A passing score, by time of employment, on a state or local academic assessment that measures knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics. More information can be found at: https://www.wesd.org/page/63
  • Must have a valid Oregon driver’s license
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or OHA exception required prior to starting work. If you meet the criteria, new employee’s exceptions can acquire OHA exceptions through the district. Employees with exceptions must test for COVID weekly.
  • Must be able to complete all tasks described in full job description (available upon request)
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Willingness and ability to assume responsibility of one-on-one working relationships with students and staff


Essential Functions

  • Assist students/staff in finding and using resources.
  • Maintain Media Center décor, environment (heating, lighting, plants, furniture) and maintain meaningful exhibits.
  • Maintain the Media Center as a welcoming environment at all times. Manage the circulation of all materials via an automation system.
  • Prepare circulation desk for daily use. Check out, renew and receive materials. Keep circulation records print and nonprint.
  • Keep record of overdue materials and prepare overdue lists and bills.
  • Shelve books, pamphlets, magazines, audiovisual media and other accumulated library materials. Shelve all materials while checking for wear and repair and needs. Shelf read to maintain correct shelf order.
  • Check-in materials from ESD or State Library; collect and prepare them for return.
  • Schedule and circulate audiovisual equipment, supplies and materials. Replace lamps, and keep library equipment clean.
  • Manage audiovisual equipment circulation and simple repairs cleaning, and watching for repair needs.
  • Supervise students and class activities scheduled in the Media Center, maintaining rules and appropriate library tone under the direction of the building principal.
  • Assist with materials processing and inventory.
  • Process periodicals daily, including management of the periodical archives.
  • Process books and media.
  • Fulfill all other expectations of the building principal regarding management of technology, materials collection and Media Center promotional activities.
  • Communicate regularly with the building principal about needs, problems, repairs, patron concerns and patron requests.
  • Maintain awareness of school rules, safety, and health expectations for staff and students.
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior, confidentiality of information, awareness of copyright law and adherence to district policies.
  • Maintain financial records such as book fairs, lost/damage books, and fines to be posted to the Media Center.

  • Communicates effectively and appropriately in both oral and written form.
  • Communicates effectively in Spanish or Russian (if assigned) in both oral and written form.
  • Operate standard office equipment such as computers, and copiers; and operate audio-visual equipment.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and staff.
  • Supervises students in and outside of the classroom with an understanding of and provision for a safe environment.
  • Performs various clerical functions in student record keeping, monitors assignments, maintains accurate files, and other related functions.
  • Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, and play periods.
  • Assist with large group activities as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling
  • Alerts the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality when dealing with student and staff information.
  • Follows all safety rules and takes all reasonable precautions to provide a safe and secure working environment.

  • Collaborates and confers with students, parents, colleagues, and community members in a harmonious and respectful manner.
  • Assists parents and community members as needed.

Bilingual (Spanish) abilities are preferred, but not required.


Evaluation

CLASSIFIED - Following the probationary period, performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.


Terms of Employment

This position is a 200 day contract. The start date for this position is August 2023 for the 2023-2024 school year.
