Job Description


  * Performs all procedures that electrographically record sleep and it's associated phenomena, including the application of patient monitoring devices and the calibrations of recording instruments in accordance with established AASM guidelines. * Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for patients requiring this diagnostic modality. * Serves as a resource to non-credentialed PSGTs. * Performs initial and ongoing patient assessment to assure appropriate understanding and compliance with testing procedures, patient safety, and ability of patient to effectively participate in the testing. * Continuously monitors patient activity and maintains quality recordings through recognition and correction of artifactual data, while remaining vigilant of patient safety and comfort. * Scores polysomnogram and computer generated records, based on AASM, Rechtshaffer and Kales scoring criteria. * Maintains records to provide complete clinical information and to assure accurate patient charging.  complies with AASM guidelines of documentation, and provide the physician with a copy of the results. * Assures that equipment and supplies are available to assure quality patient care.  Maintains inventories, makes copies, and updates reference manuals as needed. * Performs daily maintenance and calibration on all sleep testing equipment.  Serves as a resource person for other departments. * Assists in the development and presentation of educational lectures, conferences, and promotional activities. * Acts as point of contact for issues pertaining to sleep testing and diagnostic studies. * Collects and analyzes Performance Improvement data, including appointment delay times. * Reviews insurance eligibility. **_Know How_** Job Knowledge: Specify required education, licensure/certification, prior experience, skill, behavior, equipment operation, type and duration of on-the-job training, patient population to be served, etc. * The incumbent must be a registered polysomnography technologist (RPSGT). * CPR required, ACLS desired.  * The individual must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills required to proficiently provide care to a patient population to include:  adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. * (RPSGT = Board of Polysomnographic Technologists) Leadership: Short, specific statements about skills needed in areas of planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating the work that is to be done. * The incumbent will serve as a sleep center resource for physicians, staff and students.  * The incumbent must be able to organize and prioritize departmental responsibilities to optimize quality patient care.  * Recommends changes in therapeutic modalities to promote the most positive outcome.  * Responsible for assisting with planning and implementing strategies that enhance sleep center certification by the AASM. Human Relations Skills: With whom does the person come into contact and to what degree. * The incumbent will have extensive contact with inter- and intra-departmental personnel, physicians, and their office personnel, and public.  * It is imperative that he/she have good communication skills and reflect a positive, caring attitude toward both staff and public.  * As a resource for lesser experienced technologists, must have the interpersonal skills to assist without offending. **_Problem Solving_** Please give examples of the types of major problems encountered and challenges of the job. * Resolution of patient non-compliance issues. * Detection and determination of nature of equipment failures. * Compliance with regulatory guidelines. **_Accountability_** Freedom to act: List examples of major decisions the incumbent can make (employment, termination, coaching, budget, customer service, etc.) * Research and offer input for policies and procedures to assure high quality patient care. * Represent the sleep disorders center in dealing with family members, physicians, hospital staff, and patient's concerns over care provided. * Recommend changes in therapeutic modalities to promote positive outcomes.  * Develop marketing strategies for the SDC and evaluate their effectiveness. * The incumbent is expected to submit the following decisions for prior approval: deviations from departmental budget, deviations from patient protocols, and major complaints of patient, family, attending physician, or other hospital departments relating to assigned patients or the lab. Impact: Volume, expense budget including personnel  (or Indeterminate) * Directly impacts budget, expenses, and revenue through efficiency of time utilization, effective and dynamic patient scheduling, flexibility, and reliability.  * Helps market service, thus impacting patient demand.
