General Definition and Scope of Job

The Central Processing Department (CPD) Technician is responsible for decontaminating and sterilizing instruments, medical supplies, and equipment. They monitor biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination process. They verify that equipment functions properly, completes requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair or replacement and removes defective equipment when necessary. The CPD Tech collects, sorts, and distributes sets of instruments, trays, crash carts, and medical equipment and makes them available to hospital departments in a timely manner.

Job Status: Casual (8, 10 or 12 hour shifts)

Minimum Skills, Experience and Educational Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in hospital central processing department or operating room.
  • Completion of an accredited Central Processing Technician program.
  • Maintains certification as a Certified Central Processing Technician.
  • Ability to multi-task and keep area organized.

Critical Demands of the Job

  • Ability to successfully complete general orientation.
  • Ability to successfully complete the unit competency inventory/staff development plan.
  • Ability to lift floor to waist level – 15 lbs.
  • Ability to lift waist level and above – 10 lbs.
  • Ability to carry objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to push/pull up to 100 lbs.
  • Performs on-call responsibilities.
  • Ability to read, write and interpret written English word.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to practice universal precautions as needed each workday.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy while multi-tasking.
  • Able to stand 80% of the day.
Working Conditions
  • Work flow is quick and department is frequently busy.
  • Unpredictable mealtimes. Breaks and lunches are scheduled around patient needs.
  • Prolonged standing/walking.
  • Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens and other infectious diseases.
  • Must be able to tolerate wearing protective gear (including, but not limited to, barrier gloves, moisture impervious gowns, protection eyewear and face shields).
