The job of Special Education Teacher is done for the purpose of assisting administrators, teachers, and other staff members in developing individualized educational programs and providing direct instruction to students with disabilities under the general supervision of the principal. 

This position is full-time during the school year (184 days), with the possibility of optional additional days for summer school. Salary is dependent on education and years of experience.

This position will serve three sites:
Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center (Spokane, WA)
Success through Academic Connections (SAC) School (Spokane, WA)
Martin Hall Juvenile Detention Facility in (Medical Lake, WA) 

This job reports to the principal, Center for Juvenile Detention Services.

  • Develops curriculum and programs for the purpose of addressing students’ specialized needs.
  • Develops and manages learning experiences for all classroom activities (e.g. small group, direct instruction, inclusion, independent practice, and one-on-one) for the purpose of monitoring student goals and objectives.
  • Conducts appropriate assessments for the purpose of determining program eligibility and services.
  • Establishes classroom management programs for the purpose of supporting appropriate classroom behavior.
  • Establishes, monitors, and adjusts behavior management plans for individual student needs for the purpose of monitoring student behavior.
  • Coordinates specialized instruction for the purpose of adapting regular education curriculum as appropriate.
  • Prepares, applies, and adjusts current special education practices, theories, and teaching strategies for the purpose of appropriately delivering specially designed instruction.
  • Accesses available resources (e.g. other personnel, literature, research, and professional development) for the purpose of utilizing any and all available resources.
  • Communicates appropriately and effectively with parents, NEWESD staff, school district staff, and students for the purpose of providing appropriate specially designed instruction.
  • Requests special education documentation (e.g. IEP, evaluation) from the home school district for the purpose of gathering pertinent information for each student.
  • Updates the IEP if it has expired or is due while the student is enrolled in the Center for Juvenile Detention Services for the purpose of providing information in compliance with state and federal regulations. 
  • Completes all required reports and records for the purpose of relaying information in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Maintains a data system for the purpose of accurately recording student count.
  • Maintains continuous performance data for the purpose of tracking IEP objectives and documenting progress on IEP forms.
  • Trains and supervises support staff and volunteers for the purpose of special education staff coordination.
  • Works cooperatively with staff to implement, train, and monitor specialized behavior plans with appropriate students for the purpose of producing individualized behavior results.
  • Shares IEP profile with NEWESD classroom teachers and detention center staff for the purpose of ensuring a common understanding among stakeholders.  
  • Works effectively with multidisciplinary team and students for the purpose of assuring appropriate learning experiences.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.

SKILLS are required to perform single, non-technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.  Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, read technical information, compose a variety of documents, facilitate group discussions, and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: 

  • age appropriate activities, 
  • pertinent codes, policies, regulations, and laws 
  • stages of child development, and
  • trauma informed practices. 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and events, gather, collate, and classify data, and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances, analyze data utilizing defined but different processes, and operate equipment using standardized methods.   In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.  Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:

Responsibility

Responsibilities include working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives, leading, guiding, and coordinating others, and operating within a defined budget. There is some opportunity to effect the agency’s services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling, and some fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience

Job related experience within specialized field is required.

Education 

Bachelor's degree in job related area.

Certificates & Licenses

Valid Washington State teaching certificate with special education endorsement.

Valid driver license, required auto insurance, and reliable personal transportation.

Clearances

WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance/fingerprinting (at employee's expense)
