Job Description


Oversees jobs that lead, perform and provide services for the support, development, facilitation, implementation, evaluation, and management of the Office of Native American Initiatives (ONAI). Ensures high levels of quality of work and interaction. Applies leadership skills and subject matter expertise related to functions of ONAI and provides coaching and mentoring to existing staff. Supports the vision, direction, and organization of initiatives with the overall mission of advancing ONAI’s goals. Responsible for the development and implementation of events, programming, and support for Indigenous Recruitment, Retention, and Graduation support, including support for faculty and staff at NAU. Responsible for designing and implementing communication systems for the Office of Native American Initiatives and in collaboration with the Office of Indigenous Student Success (OISS).

Leadership & Supervision - 50%

  • Management and implementation of all current and new ONAI programming initiatives including but not limited to the following areas.
    • Oversee the identification, assessment, and selection of Indigenous Living community residency sites, programming and support.
    • Management of the Indigenous Cohorts of Care program administration and programming, including selection of mentors, and program participants.
    • Supervision of the NACC Indige-Jack Student Workers as Indigenous Peer support and mentors for all Indigenous students at NAU including outreach to distance and online learning students.
    • Creation and implementation of events for the NAU community that focus on Indigenous culture and histories, academic preparation, social outreach, and health and well-being.
    • Development and programming for the Indigenous Pathways and Recruitment activities to promote recruitment and retention.
  • Applies proficient ability in work design, project management, financial planning, and goal development; applies proficient knowledge of common management tactics, such as providing formal performance reviews and final employment decisions, to effectively lead a large team; applies awareness of trends and changes; has advanced knowledge and skills across multiple areas or functions.
  • Supervises teams that includes multiple supervisors of supervisors; coaches, mentors, and motivates staff; defines work goals and standards; evaluates individual and team performance on difficult work assignments; reviews completed work to verify technical soundness, with an emphasis on complex or novel solutions.
    • Provides substantial input for performance and rewards decisions; has influence over employment decisions; allocates resources across functional areas; approves resource use decisions.
  • Applies awareness of trends and changes for NACC and support efforts to improve, modify, or design new processes.
    • Understands trends of both popular and Indigenous cultures to maintain updated information, designs, and major initiatives.

Outreach/Communications - 25%

  • Develops and implements a comprehensive outreach and communication strategy to build awareness of and support for ONAI and in collaboration with OISS.
    • Develops and maintains ONAI website with emphasis on increasing recruitment, retention, and graduation rates for Indigenous students.
    • Develops and maintains all social media outlets and works closely with NAU Marketing for content creation.
    • Develops and maintains ONAI newsletter and communications with outside media.
    • In collaboration with ONAI Director of Development, assists with all fund development strategies and communications.

NACC Development - 10%

  • Oversees the mission, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Native American Cultural Center (NACC) including building operations and maintenance.
    • Formulate and execute a program evaluation plan for NACC.
    • Monitors the effectiveness of NACC and recommends methods for continuous improvement.
    • Assists with managing the development of the new NACC building expansion.

Financial Planning - 10%

  • Create a feasible program budget with sustainable external funding sources.
  • Represent programs to external stakeholders, cultivate relationships, and pursue additional funding opportunities from various local, state, and national resources.

Internal/External Partnerships - 5%

  • Build strong and sustainable partnerships with tribal and educational leaders.
    • Develop strong relationships with NAU administrators, faculty, staff, and Tribal leaders and develop future partnerships.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master’s, PhD, etc. or other professional certification.

  • Knowledge of higher education administrative systems and related business principles.
  • Knowledge of industry compliance laws and administrative practices.
  • Knowledge of federal web-based grants management systems.
  • Budget development and fiscal management skills.

COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement

Background Information


Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary


Salary range begins at $95,809. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.


FLSA Status


This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.


Benefits


This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of employment.
