Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications

Overview
The Steam & Power Plant I is the entry-level position into the Heating Plant Department. This department is essential to the operation, production, distribution, maintenance, and repair of NIU's Steam Power Plants (high pressure boilers), Chilled Water Plants, Hot Water Systems (mechanical, heating, and domestic), HVAC equipment, and Climate Control of all facilities. This position is the stepping stone to a career in this field, as this position receives training and experience in the operation of high pressure steam boilers to become a boiler operator (Steam & Power Plant II).

Position Summary
Clean boilers, mechanical rooms and all related equipment such as pumps, supply fans, heating and AC equipment as well as assists in the repair of the above mentioned items.

The individual in this position must ensure that safe work practices and procedures are being followed at all times. Duties must be performed competently in routine as well as emergency situations as the Heating Plant is an essential service of the university. This individual can refer to guidelines and instructions provided by this department.

Flexibility in work shifts will be a requirement due to the 24/7/365 nature of this department's essential service to the University.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Steam Power Plant Maintenance & Repairs
  • Assist in boiler room operations performing maintenance on high-pressure steam boilers. This would include routine maintenance on entire boiler structures and feed water treatment systems.

Facilities Maintenance & Repairs
  • Perform preventative maintenance on various types of equipment (including HVAC equipment), which includes lubrication, cleaning of air handling systems, and the changing of air filters.

On The Job Training
  • Receive training to prepare the individual for the duties of the Steam & Power Plant II and/or duties of the Steam & Power Plant III.

Preventative Observation
  • Routine inspection and maintenance of campus infrastructure including all campus buildings, steam tunnels, and water mains.

Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service)
  1. Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses repair, and maintenance; power plant equipment, steam-generating equipment, and pollution-control devices.
  2. Knowledge of systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and other office procedures and terminology.
  3. Ability and willingness to follow both oral and written directions.
  4. Ability to work with others.
  5. Ability to tell when something is wrong or likely to go wrong.
  6. Ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
  7. Ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without fatiguing.
  8. Ability to listen and understand information presented by others and to communicate information and ideas so others can understand.
  9. Ability to work in conditions with wide variation of temperature exposure.

Physical demands/requirements
  • Must be able to enter (entire body) into a confined work space through an elliptical opening as small as 11 1/2" xy 16".
  • Must be able to work in areas that are tight-fitting, dark, and classified by OSHA as Confined Work Spaces for periods of time without becoming claustrophobic.
  • Must have the skill and agility required to work in locations up to 50 feet above the ground.
  • Must have the ability to work in hazardous environments ranging from -60 degrees F wind chill to 160 degrees F for period of time, ensuring that safe work practices are always followed.
  • Must have the ability to work while wearing OSHA rated PPE including air filtration respirator.
  • This position also provides the physical labor for movement of equipment and commodities which include hazardous material i.e., sulfuric acid, caustic soda solution, globular bisodium sulfate and various other oxidizing agents.
