Summary:

The Certified Athletic Training provides athletic training services to patients under the direction of the NL Sports Health Medical Director or by written referral from a provider in accordance with Maine state athletic training licensure laws. Medical coverage may be given at high schools, middle schools, local colleges, or within the surrounding communities. The athletic trainer is responsible for providing athletic training services to school(s) and organizations with which the NL Sports Health program has a contract to provide services. The athletic trainer must demonstrate an ability to perform the following functions: prevention, acute and emergent care, assessment, treatment, reconditioning and rehabilitation of injuries as set forth by the NATA Board of Certification (BOC) and evidence-based best practices. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the triaging and evaluation of injuries and illnesses, establishing a proper plan of care, determining most appropriate first-aid treatment or other necessary intervention(s), coordination of care, education, determination and oversight of return to activity, discharge planning and commensurate documentation practices. In addition, the athletic trainer may be assisting with day to day operations of the NL Sports Health program and/or Orthopedics department. The athletic trainer may provide coverage for other area events as assigned by the manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Renders first aid, acute, and emergency care including wound care, internal organ trauma, acute fracture care, CPR, spine and extremity immobilization
    • Develops injury prevention programs including dynamic warmups and ACL injury prevention
    • Creates and provides appropriate preventative devices for the physically active person including taping, splinting, and bracing
    • Performs in depth, systematic assessment relative to chief complaint of the patient.
    • Discusses assessment findings and measurable appropriate goals with the patient based on estimated length of recovery for various diagnoses and documents these goals.
    • Utilizes subjective and objective evaluation results to plan appropriate treatment program which focuses on strength, neuromuscular control, joint mobility, soft tissue integrity, pain, balance, coordination, posture, cardiopulmonary function, endurance, gait and functional abilities.
    • Administers proper use of therapeutic modalities such as mechanical stimulation, heat, cold, light, air, water, electricity, sound, manual therapy and massage. Possess proper knowledge of their indications and contraindications
    • Instructs patient and family in their participation with the rehabilitation program.
    • Provides each patient with appropriate updated written home program on an as needed basis and at discharge.
    • Involves patient and family as appropriate in evaluation, treatment planning and discharge.
    • Consults with physicians, other caregivers and staff for further clarification as needed
    • Utilizes and follows program and school concussion protocols, including implementation of ImPACT baseline concussion testing for students

    oAssure that the Concussion Policy is being followed with the Return to Learn and Return to Play protocols outlined in the program and school concussion policy in conjunction with treating physician.

    • Carry out all prescribed treatments and recommendations made by team/program/event physician.
    • Act as liaison between physicians and specialists, to consult about injury diagnosis, injury prognosis, and treatment plans
    • Communicates with school districts in regards to injuries or illnesses that may affect school participation
    • Communicates with coaches about patients’ injury status, return to play, and practice modifications
    • Communicates with parents regarding patients’ injury status, treatment plan, and ability to return to competition. This may require several phone calls.
    • Completes and maintains accurate and timely written documentation that includes initial evaluations, progress notes, home programs, discharge summaries, statistical reporting through provided EMR system.
    • Seeks referrals for patients for proper diagnostic and follow-up procedures with appropriate providers as necessary
    • Provides medical coverage of home sanctioned athletic events and away football and playoff games at assigned school(s) and other events as assigned by the manager.
    • Develops and maintains Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for contracted sites
    • Develops and maintains policies and procedures for athletic training room at contracted sites
    • Provides input and recommendations to the Athletic Director at site for an effective budget that will cover the projected costs of equipment and supplies needed to maintain quality and safety of student-athlete care.
    • Instructs student-athletes and families on relevant topics based on assessed learning needs, including concussion care, injury management, care, and prevention.
    • Instructs and educates appropriate coaches/school officials on relevant learning needs specific to the injured athlete.
    • Assists the Manager of NL Sports Health in evaluating program effectiveness and provide any program updates in a timely manner
    • Must have means to travel to assigned school(s) and events by personal vehicle.
    • Work hours could include weekend and/or evening hours.
    • Maintain certifications and licensures by staying current with evidence-based practices

    o Obtain BOC required 50 CEU’s every two years

Outreach Athletic Trainer II requirements:

Master’s Degree required.

Board Certified Athletic Trainer

Maine state licensure or licensure eligible

BLS/CPR/AED certification

Experience and familiarity with athletic training in the secondary school setting, preferred.

Outreach Athletic Trainer I requirements:

Bachelor's Degree required.

Board Certified Athletic Trainer
