What are the responsibilities and job description for the Patient Service Representative position at NorthShore Health Centers?
This is a FLOAT position. Reliable transportaiton is required. The schedule for this position would be Monday, Tuesday and Friday.
The front desk is the first point of contact between NorthShore Health Centers and its patients. Job duties of patient service representatives include greeting visitors and patients, registering patients, scheduling appointments and collecting patient co-payments and sliding fee payments while providing excellent customer service.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Greets patients and visitors in a cordial and friendly manner, determines purpose of visit and directs them to appropriate department to ensure a positive customer service experience.
2. Follow HIPAA policy guidelines at all times ensuring protection of confidential information.
3. Registers new and established patients, inputting all pertinent patient information accurately, and obtains written consent for release of patient medical records.
4. Completes financial screenings for patients who are uninsured or underinsured, utilizing all appropriate financial information, to ensure patients receive healthcare services that are affordable.
5. Verifies patient health benefits, i.e. Medicaid, Medicare, or commercial insurance to ensure the health services the patient is receiving during their visit is covered under the plan; for billing and collection accuracy.
6. Submit prior-authorization request through insurance company if needed based on specialty/department
7. Collects all insurance co-pays and sliding fee payments for services rendered to each patient at the time of visit, and collects on any past due balances.
8. Checks out patients and schedules follow-up visit, as required, using appropriate scheduling template guidelines, to allow ample time for providers’ to perform quality patient care.
9. Communicates patient wait times with patients, and if excessive, gives other options for patients to pursue.
10. Educates patients on all services that are provided at NorthShore.
11. Balances money collected for patient services at the end of the work day, to ensure that all funds collected are allocated properly.
12. Answers incoming calls in a courteous and professional manner, addresses the nature of the call, and directs to appropriate department to ensure good customer satisfaction.
13. Attends meetings and training sessions as required.
14. Maintains a working knowledge of practice policies and procedures.
15. Executes other verbal or written specific assigned tasks, requiring similar or lesser skills and abilities, some which are continuing while others are occasional in nature.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Graduate or equivalent
- Computer experience required
- Knowledge of medical terminology required
- General clerical skills with accurate spelling and legible handwriting
- Excellent speaking and listening skills
- One year previous medical office experience
- Good customer service skills
- Knowledge of HIPAA privacy and security rules
- Detail Oriented
- Adequate math skills for balancing patient payment form
- Ability to handle repetitive tasks efficiently
- Shows respect and sensitivity for cultural differences, promotes a harassment-free work environment, and is capable of relating to people of diverse age, ethnic, racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds

- May require driving to a different NorthShore Site to complete job duties on occasion, for meetings, etc.

Pay: $16.00 - $21.00 per hour
