Shift: Full time, Evenings , 40 hrs/week
Reporting to the Shift Supervisor, the Security Officer provides security services to provide a safe and secure environment in the hospital and off- campus locations for all patients, visitors and employees. Monitors and conducts foot patrols of all interior building and hospital grounds responding to all safety and security concerns, codes and requests for assistance. Provides support and physical assistance as required for safety, security, manpower, hazardous materials, medical evacuation and crisis response situations; as well as providing excellent customer service to all.
1. Responds to all hospital codes, alarms, and security related incidents; decides what actions to take based on situation, facts known and position limitations. Protects property form theft, defacement, embezzlement, sabotage, fire and accidents.
2. Must adhere to all site specific post order requirements. Observes activity and traffic in assigned area to enforce hospital regulations, enforces badge procedures.
3. Provides assistance to patients arriving to the Emergency Department under the direct supervision of clinical staff, unless explicitly advised otherwise. Provides needed assistance to customers, employees, visitors that are in line with the department’s procedures.
4. Conducts foot patrols of interior/exterior campus facilities to ensure that all buildings, offices and rooms are properly secured, all equipment is properly stored, and all safety, fire and security standards are adhered to. Monitors campus activity through security system surveillance. Appropriately responds to situations encountered and takes appropriate action according to policies/procedures.
5. Provides directions or assistance to visitors or staff as appropriate. Ensures all access control systems, monitors, cameras and communications devices are operational. Contacts management and/or authorities to report violations as warranted.
6. Investigates and writes reports on accidents, incidents, suspicious activities, safety and fire hazards and other security related situations to supervisor for correction or follow-up actions; maintains contact with NCH supervisory team.
7. Responds to all requests for physical assistance where force is required to restrain an individual to protect staff, patients, and other persons from personal harm and/or injury. Provides staff/visitor escort and patient carry services as requested. Conducts safety inspections of designated areas, rooms and departments to assist staff in maintaining a safe environment according to Joint Commission standards. Conducts fire drills throughout the complex and monitors drills of other hospital facilities. Provides technical safety and crime prevention information to staff to assist in maintaining a safe hospital environment and may assist in training new hospital personnel on the use of safety equipment and restraint techniques.
8. Investigates security related issues and documents related information on Incident Reports as required. Works in collaboration with various departments on security issues. Gathers statistical information pertaining to vehicle counts, traffic flow, pedestrian traffic, parking counts and other information requested by Administration for use in planning/developing future construction and quality improvement initiatives.
9. Participates in hospital security operations of an emergent, crisis or hazardous nature and disaster planning skills as appropriate per hospital policy and procedures.
10. Collects, secures and maintains patient valuables in the patient valuables envelopes.
11. Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies and procedures.
Qualifications
1. The level of knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a High School education or equivalent.
Working knowledge of the Security Laws in the State of Illinois preferred.
2. Ability to pass NCH written Security Competency Test within 6 months of initial date of employment and annually thereafter.
3. Must successfully complete and maintain a minimum standard of American Heart Association Adult Heartsaver CPR and EAD training within 3 months of hire.
4. Ability to successfully complete mandatory Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) within 3 months of hire and annually thereafter.
5. Must possess a valid State of Illinois driver’s license.
6. Must be able to physically restrain and/or apprehend a person, using the minimum force necessary to control the situation providing protection to designated persons using appropriate self-defense when necessary.
7. Ability to follow verbal and written directions and instructions accurately.
8. Must be able to walk /run long distances, climb stairs, life heavy persons and/or equipment.
9. Mental and visual acuity required to observe, recall and document security and safety observations accurately.
10. Effective inter-personal communications skills to deal appropriately with all NCH staff, patients, visitors, physicians, vendors and community agencies.
11. Ability to operate a computer to compile reports, shift logs, and reports.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Requires moderate physical effort with continuous standing and walking with the occasional requirement to walk or run long distances.
2. Frequently requires considerable physical effort responding to manpower assistance requests involving physical restraint situations or lifting/moving people.
3. May require frequent lifting or moving of average weight material, or occasionally lifting or moving heavy weight material and may frequently require lifting or moving heavy weight material in difficult work positions.
4. Flow of work and character of duties involves part normal and part concentrated mental and visual acuity.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Conditions are generally acceptable.
2. At least one disagreeable element or hazard is frequently present in the environment, while several disagreeable elements or hazards are occasionally present. Hazards may involve contact with radiant, infectious or toxic materials.
3. In physical restraint situations, the potential risk of personal injury or discomfort is moderate. Frequent interaction with mental and emotional stress related to working with persons that are ill, disabled, elderly, and or emotionally upset.
4. Work is performed inside and outside the property with exposure to inclement weather and unpredictable crisis situations. Shift work required. AN individual in this position will be exposed to the following environmental conditions when performing duties: Inside and outside environmental conditions, combative persons, rare exposure to blood and body fluids.
