What are the responsibilities and job description for the Risk Analyst position at Northwest Farm Credit Services?

Northwest Farm Credit Services is in search of a Risk Analyst to join our Data Management team in our Spokane Headquarters location. As a member-owned financial cooperative, we help business owners in agriculture, forestry and fisheries secure the financing they need to operate and grow, and the crop insurance they need to protect their livelihoods. Our customers are primarily located in Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Alaska.

This full-time position reports to the Vice President of Data Management and is accountable for using analytical tools and capabilities to provide objective assurance and advisory services in the identification and monitoring of significant risks and risk response strategies and actions.

Essential Duties:

  • Support the development of predictive key risk indicator metrics to assist management in the early identification of risk trends; conducts detailed analysis and data mining to identify, validate, and enumerate existing and emerging risks.
  • Prepare reports, data visualizations, and presentations that outline findings, explain risk positions, and recommended changes. Partner with business unit management to prepare risk self-assessments, including analyzing the stated controls, identifying gaps, and creating action plans.
  • Maintain existing quantitative models and contributes the development of new models to support strategic objectives and decision making.
  • Conduct analysis and draw conclusions of stress test scenarios involving stress to portfolios, commodities, interest rates and capital levels.
  • Provide assistance to business units in the identification, evaluation, understanding, management, and communication of significant risks; assists with the development and maintenance of risk frameworks, methodologies and assessments.
  • Perform calculations and data analysis to produce the quarterly allowance for credit losses (ACL) deliverables; contribute to internal management reporting of the ACL and ensure appropriate controls and validations are conducted throughout the ACL process.
  • Provide support in the development and maintenance of end user applications including databases and spreadsheets to assist with the management and performance of risk management functions.
  • Provide administration for risk management software programs including maintaining the data quality of systems.
  • Serve as a liaison with farm credit system risk analytics workgroups.
  • Develop recommendations for ways to control or reduce risk.
  • Analyze new legislation to determine impacts on risk exposure

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business analytics, mathematics/statistics, data science/management, agricultural economics or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least three years’ financial institution experience in risk management, business analytics, audit, accounting or operations role
  • Systems and data analysis skills
  • Knowledge of statistical and financial analytical tools, accounting principles (GAAP), risk management and internal control standards (e.g., COSO, COBIT, SOX, regulations)
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills in Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Visio

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or other advanced degree
  • Proficiency with Power BI, R, SQL, Business Objects, and other data analysis tools
  • Knowledge of economic, financial and agricultural practices having a potential impact on credit and risk exposure
  • Credit and/or lending experience
  • CPA or data analytics certification
