Overview
This position assists the Controller with technical accounting issues, including tax preparation, compliance reporting, and policy management. The Accountant 3 is also tasked with supervision and maintenance of the accounting program for subsidiary companies. This person will also play an integral part to support monthly, quarterly and year-end close.
This is a hybrid position that is a blend of working both remotely and in office. Must reside in the Northwest Service Region (Oregon or Washington).

Major Responsibilities / Essential Functions
General Accounting
- Assist with timely month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes by performing the following:
- Prepare, enter and proof journal entries and reconciliations
- Review and approve journal entries and reconciliations
- Collaborate with Northwest Permanente and Kaiser Permanente Health Plan colleagues to ensure deadlines are met on a timely basis
- Participate in cross-training within the department as needed
- Create and apply process improvements to current job duties
- Collaborate and outreach to other departments as needed
- Support Finance department with budgeting questions and analysis
Technical Accounting
- Perform technical accounting research and draft related position papers
- Liaison with external auditors to ensure timely sign off of technical accounting matters
- Serve as the accounting software subject matter expert
- Participate in valuations of outside companies on an as needed basis
Compliance and Policy Management
- Prepare and manage specified tax filings and payments
- Manage policies owned by Accounting, including drafting and implementing new policies, maintaining and enforcing current policies, and managing the approval chain process
- Fulfill compliance reporting requirements, including government reporting
- Assist with annual audit and tax provision work
- Stay current on legislation impacting Northwest Permanente, both directly and indirectly
Minimum Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or five (5) years equivalent work experience
Minimum Work Experience
- Minimum three (3) years of accounting or finance experience, including financial statement analysis
- Minimum three (3) years of demonstrated spreadsheet skills and business writing skills
Additional Requirements
- Strong technical accounting skills and knowledge of GAAP
- Strong research and documentation skills
- Demonstrated experience in a computer-based accounting system
- Excellent skills in the Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Word
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including explaining financial information
- Ability to work under time constraints
- Solid interpersonal skills
- Must be a self-starter with strong sense of initiative and follow-through
- Ability to work within various degrees of supervision, whether independently or as part of a team
Preferred Education
- CPA
- CVA
Preferred Work Experience and Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of computer applications and environments, including databases
- Previous experience in a healthcare organization
- Previous experience at Kaiser Permanente
- Experience with inter-regional/inter-entity accounting concepts
- Familiarity with the Sage Intacct accounting system
- Knowledge of inter-entity accounting, including usage of Due To/Due From accounts
