Anticipated starting salary is between $147,390 - $173,400 depending on qualifications. The Director, Operations (Strategy Center) will be responsible for providing management and oversight for the operations strategy center which includes rail, roads, container terminals, and the management of the waterway. This position will partner with Port stakeholders across the various operational sectors to deliver cost competitive and efficient operational solutions through utilizing a proactive, collaborative, and innovative approach. The incumbent will effectively lead a team that is focused on providing exceptional service to Port and alliance customers.
- Plans, organizes, and directs the operation strategy center functions of the alliance that includes terminal, road, rail, and the management of the Waterway. Collaborates and develops innovative approaches with Port stakeholders to deliver cost competitive and efficient operational solutions.
- Develops and implements Operations policies, best practices, procedures, and programs. Monitors and keeps the Executive leadership apprised of port industry trends and innovations in marine container terminals, road, and rail operations. Coordinates alliance operations strategies and plans with the Commercial Team and other internal stakeholders in a manner that fosters growth, efficiency, and a strong financial base.
- Effectively manages assigned staff and ensures that staff are appropriately developed, coached, and counseled.
- Develops and maintains collegial relationships with customers both internally and externally. Represents the alliance and the Port before appropriate customers, terminal operators and community organizations and serves on ad hoc alliance, Port and industry committees.
- Assists the Head of Operations with labor relations for ILWU Local 19 and 23.
- Leads the alliance’ Executive Advisory Council with the mission to delivery “best in class” service delivery through the implementation of improve processes and technology to ensure the PNW gateway is the easiest to do business with.
Bachelor’s degree from a Maritime Academy or in business with specialization in transportation or related discipline is required. An additional four (4) years of relevant experience may substitute for a bachelor’s degree. A master’s degree is desirable.
A minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in positions in the ocean carrier, port, rail, or terminal operator industries is required.
Experience in a union environment is preferred.The ideal candidate will have significant knowledge and understanding of maritime industry and port operations. Must be an effective communicator, both orally and in writing, and possess strong analytical skills. Must have highly developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills. The ability to think and act creatively in achieving business goals is a key characteristic of success.
