Position Overview

The Novelis Bay Minette, AL team is seeking a Mechanical Utility Engineer to work on site with our Central Maintenance team. This role will report to the Utility Manager. The ideal candidate will be responsible for leading mechanical engineering and providing support to reinforce the achievement of the plant’s safety, quality, sustainability and budget objectives. This position will be responsible for the activities of others keeping the team current with the constantly evolving technology, balancing it with the needs of the operations to bring forth improvements in automated systems and methods.

 

This person will be a key member of the project team for new facility as well as ready the plant for operations.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Drive the plant effort on Safe Work Practices and optimal design for EHS
  • Be responsible for full scope of the utility engineering project including budget control, schedule, and compliance with safety, environmental and sustainability requirements, to assure performance against expectations
  • Lead the discussions on equipment infrastructure design, detailed engineering with the OEMs, the EOR, and third parties
  • Coordinate the Mechanical build, commissioning, and acceptance tests of a new World Class Manufacturing utilities in this facility
  • Travel locally and abroad to perform inspections, technical meetings, and receive training
  • Meet assigned project commitment and timelines
  • Communicate regularly with project team members to provide status updates as needed or to scope projects
  • Elaborate scope of project, analysis technical and commercial offer and submit purchase request for approval
  • Collaborate with the team in order to drive operational readiness of the plant production commissioning (elaborate and deliver training, elaborate maintenance plans, FMEA, fine tune the equipment and process for optimal performance)
  • Develop the technical team on hard and soft skills
  • Provide a strong Mechanical understanding of process and components involved in their equipment
  • Develop and define the Key Performance Indicators (Uptime, MTTR, MTBF, PM Completion, etc.), and create, lead and communicate the monthly dashboard for Mechanical reliability
  • Develop and refine the Mechanical preventive/paredictive maintenance program in a systematic, professional manner coordinating all efforts with operations, engineering, and the Mechanical team, to ensure the program is properly approved and endorsed
  • Provide administration, control and analysis of all data, records and equipment histories to continually review and refine PM/PdM frequencies
  • Coordinate and provide appropriate Mechanical training on PM/PdM techniques for selected Mechanical maintenance and engineering personnel on appropriate topics
  • Coordinate and perform Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) for all mechanical significant failures in the facility
  • Assist in troubleshooting, advanced analysis and identify areas of potential advancements in the processes, equipment, and facilities to achieve increased profitability through reduced costs, increased efficiency, improved quality, increase production output and optimized equipment uptime
  • Perform Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) as specified by the Reliability Master Plan for the facility
  • Work closely with the Automation, Reliability & Engineering Managers, develop conceptual and functional requirements for short- and long-term process and equipment development (facility planning) consistent with the business plan
  • Technically lead maintenance technicians and engineers as needed- to resolve and prevent maintenance and engineering problems and to develop training programs on processes and equipment for the maintenance staffs
  • Develop and be a great partner with suppliers and other technical resources inside and outside of the Site and Company
  • Assignment to an on-call rotation to provide after-hours and weekend support as required to assist maintenance in the troubleshooting and resolution of issues having an immediate impact on plant performance. This can involve providing direction/mentorship remotely and/or onsite
  • Support the management of the CAPEX and OPEX budget
  • Repetitive failures are identified, and the PM is refined by dynamic and relevant review of predictive and other inspections, analysis of equipment histories, maintenance cost reports and failure reports, review of service and inspection records and work order data
  • Provide engineering expertise to project work and selection of replacement or new equipment to help ensure consistency and standardization of components and ease of maintenance
  • Constantly search for innovations and continuous improvement.
  • Prepare and present robust capital expenditure estimates, schedules, and requests, including sound financial analysis/justification, for management approval
  • Review Site equipment and technology for robustness, reliability, and obsolescence. Develop plans for modifications and/or upgrades as needed
  • Influence regional and/or global decision-making by preparing and communicating technical information to senior management on matters with significant business impact, such as regional/multi-site capital expenditures or regional process/product improvements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 7 years of dynamic experience
  • Work experience in the field of factory mechanical engineering
  • Knowledge of design, installation, and maintenance of piping systems, cooling water systems, compressors, air handlers, waste water treatment, and deinonized water generation
  • Methodical equipment problem-solving
  • Good project management skills
  • Result oriented and decision-making capability
  • Ability to advise, mentor and develop other personnel to accomplish personal, plant and corporate objectives
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills; ability to connect with all levels in the organization
  • Able to take initiative and develop a pro-active relationship with employees through follow-up, understanding their needs and encouraging a collaborative relationship
  • Able to travel up to 50% (North America and Internationally) in the first 3 years. After that period, the travel will be less than 10%.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Aluminum Finishing process experience
  • Previous experience on large capital project
  • Basic understanding of capabilities for controls and servo systems and an understanding of maintenance procedures and principles of equipment reliability
  • Experienced in trouble shooting mechanical systems including pneumatics, tooling issues, measurement feedback systems, and basic design robustness
  • Lean Six Sigma

Novelis’ newly announced Bay Minette facility will be located 35 miles northeast of Mobile, AL and 45 miles west of Pensacola, FL and is expected to create approximately 1000 high-paying, advanced careers in modern manufacturing and become fully operational in 2025. This highly advanced rolling and recycling facility will be the first of its kind. It will primarily serve our customers in the beverage can and automotive markets.
