We are currently seeking a Technician to join our team at Novelis Global Research and Technology Center in Kennesaw, Georgia. The incumbent will be a part of the Metal Processing Group, working in collaboration with physical/process metallurgy and applied engineering groups to develop leading-edge product and process technologies in current and emerging markets for Novelis Inc. With world-class people and state-of-the-art facilities, the center plays a leading role in developing advanced materials and innovative technologies supporting Novelis customers and manufacturing plants.
The Technician will be a key contributor to various research and development projects focused on sophisticated aluminum products for the automotive, transportation, packaging, architectural, consumer electronics and specialty markets. The Technician will apply niche knowledge and work experience in the operation of pilot, testing, or prototyping equipment. The incumbent will possess highly specialized knowledge and experience in the operation of specialized machinery and equipment, as well as provide technical expertise/support to both routine and non-routine processes. The Technician will be responsible for the quality of assignments with moderate scope and complexity involving an application of significant experience in operation of specialized machinery and equipment.

- Use lab management software to handle workflow in Sample Preparation Lab to complete cut matrices by deadline as requested by submitters. Resolve priorities for lab requests and distribute assignments to personal and maintain schedules for equipment.
- Assist with purchasing of new equipment.
- Responsible for setup, troubleshooting, maintenance and operation of sample preparation laboratory.
- Identify improvements or modifications to laboratory equipment and processes to improve effectiveness, accuracy, and/or efficiency.
- Accurately prepare samples for testing and ensure samples are submitted to the relevant lab for testing in a timely manner with minimal direction.
- Get cross training and provide support as needed to other labs including, but not limited, to metallography, heat treat, tribology, and others.
- Meet assigned project commitments demonstrating an understanding of project timelines and deliverables.
- Collate data from basic tasks and provide results for interpretation.
- Carry out instructions within an existing work routine, identifying and reporting delays.
- Proactively identify the type of work that needs to be performed and deliver results.
- Clearly communicate basic technical information or results effectively to colleagues and internal requesters.
- Ensure Standard Operating Procedures and Quality System protocols are current, maintained, and applied with an emphasis on good laboratory practices.
- Use equipment in a safe operating manner and in compliance with Novelis safety standards.
- Ensure consideration of EHS in design/adoption of techniques and equipment.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with work group and other internal functional areas.
- Entry to this level typically requires 3 years of relevant experience, and a high school diploma and/or certification/vocational degree, or equivalent experience. 2-year degree or better preferred.
- Experience with sample prep (e.g., shearing, marking, measuring, etc.).
- Broad experience in the use of laboratory testing tools for evaluation and testing, i.e., small lab ovens, temperature, and relative humidity data loggers
- Mechanical skill and enjoys hands-on work.
- Ability to work with limited supervision.
- Good EHS practice
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proficiency with computers and their applications to collect, store, and analyze data and images (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
- The skills for critical thinking, problem solving and attention to details
- Experience with Aluminum alloys heat treatment is preferred.
- Experience with Aluminum metallurgy (e.g., processing, metallography etc.) is preferred.
- Experience with ISO 17025 or quality systems is preferable
