The Newscast unit generates the largest audience of any public radio content in the nation with over 28 million weekly listeners. NPR newscasts are also found on the NPR One app, as a stand-alone podcast, on Smart Speaker devices from Amazon and Google and on iPhones and other Apple, Siri-enabled devices. Newscast Anchors are the voice and public face of the Newscast Unit and, jointly with newscast producers and editors, are accountable for the operational and editorial integrity of the broadcasts.
This is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA
RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepares and voices newscasts and headlines.
1. Reads and re-writes news wires; voices newscasts and headlines.
2. Updates newscasts and headlines throughout program rollovers.
3. Under the direction of program editor, makes editorial decisions on use of actualities and voice reports.
4. Gathers and edits sound and actualities
Develops ideas for spot news coverage.
1. Keeps program editor informed of changes in breaking stories.
2. Keeps abreast of regional and local stories which could be of national interest.
3. Assists in maintaining nationwide and international resources; develops sources and keeps associated files.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 5 years broadcasting experience.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
WORK LOCATION
- NPR studios in Washington, D.C.
- Remote Permitted: This is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our on-site studios but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Excellent news reading and writing skills.
Strong radio production skills.
Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system. Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
PREFERRED SKILLS
Digital audio editing experience
JOB TYPE
This is a regular part time, non-exempt position. The successful candidate will be responsible for the weekend overnight shifts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday – 24 hours per week with the potential for more as needed.
COMPENSATION
Hourly Rate: The U.S. based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is ($49.29 – $60.00) per hour. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum hourly rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
