Job Title: Chemist I
Department: Operations
FLSA Status: Salary - Exempt
Position Summary
Develops, modifies, and enhances processes for the manufacturing of specialty radioactive materials using chemical practices and techniques. Evaluates chemical and physical properties of various organic and inorganic substances. Prepares solutions, compounds, and reagents used in laboratory procedures and analyzes substances to determine their composition and concentration of elements. Develops design of experiments and writes technical reports of testing results. Prepares manufacturing work instructions and operating procedures.
Essential Functions
- Initiates improvements for the reclaim process of precious metals and radioactive elements
- Prepares test solutions, compounds, and reagents for conducting test and advising and coordinating test procedures
- Determines chemical and physical properties, compositions, structures, relationships, and reactions of organic and inorganic compounds
- Develop, improve, and customize products, equipment, formulas, processes, and analytical methods
- Develops design of experiments to analyze, interpret, and develop tests.
- Write technical procedures and reports, preparing standards and specifications for processes, tests, and products
- Maintain laboratory instruments, troubleshooting malfunctions, and purchase new laboratory supplies
- Evaluate and ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures and standards
- Uses sound judgment when making adaptations and/or modifications to existing processes
- Investigate and troubleshoot plant/process problems for root cause and countermeasures
- Works independently and adheres to strong safety principles
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or related field
- Entry level work experience
- Proven oral and written communication skills required. Must be detail orientated
- Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills
- Proficient in using computers and various analytic software tools
- Proven, reliable self-starter, able to work effectively with minimal supervision
- Must be able to wear PPE which includes but is not limited to full PAPR.
Work Environment
Work environment is consistent with that of typical manufacturing environment with multiple operations (Lab, Rolling Mills, Plating, Assembly Work Benches, and Mechanical equipment, Shipping, Receiving, Warehousing, and Quality Testing) with regular exposure to moving mechanical systems with low to moderate noise level, in a temperature and humidity-controlled area
Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and to stand or sit for long lengths of time with or without accommodation
