Job Description The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a leader in the U.S. Department of Energy’s effort to secure an energy future that is both environmentally and economically sustainable. With locations in Golden, Boulder and Washington D.C., NREL is the primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy technologies in the United States. The NREL mission is to develop renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and practices, advance related science and engineering, and transfer knowledge and innovation to address the nation’s energy and environmental goals. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking an accomplished power grid optimization engineer within the Grid Planning and Analysis Center (GPAC). GPAC research staff contribute to an exciting portfolio of energy analysis, applying advanced modeling and simulation tools to optimally plan for, design, and analyze distribution and bulk power systems. You would join us in developing innovative optimization approaches to analyze the impact of specific technologies on the evolving grid, including variable generation, energy storage, hydropower, demand response, and transmission. Example types of ongoing research and analysis include: Grid flexibility and integration studies 100% RE grids and other high RE penetration studies Impact of extreme events on power system operations Advance probabilistic methods to assess resource adequacy Revenue sufficiency and market structures Our work informs technology developers, policymakers, and utilities by developing and analyzing future grid scenarios that answer big questions about how the electric grid is transforming. This position seeks an experienced power system expert who can inform how transmission is considered in these types of analyses and help to identify emerging questions about transmission system planning and operations. Processing model results into report products that can be used for external stakeholders in Spanish and English. Preparing and storytelling around results for reports and presentations. Writing and publishing results of analyses in peer-reviewed journals and/or technical reports . Basic Qualifications Relevant Master's Degree . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience . Working knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Skilled in problem solving, written and verbal communication. Ability to use various computer software programs. * Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date. Additional Required Qualifications Experience dealing with public sector stakeholders to obtain data and information required to conduct modeling exercises. Experience with energy access and energy related development goals Usage of Data Analytics tools (R, GIS, Python or others) Experience developing analysis plans for policy development. Customer and solution-oriented problem-solving Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships internally to NREL and externally with sponsors and research partners. Demonstrated ability to organize and motivate teams to identify and resolve complex technical problems. Fluent Spanish speaker Preferred Qualifications MS-PhD in Public Policy, Development Economics, Economics Professional experience in public sector institutions or industry. Professional experience providing decision-supportive analysis to policymakers Professional experience in Latin-American countries Experience with International Development Institutions (e.g, UNFCC, UNDP, IDB, WB) . Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week) Job Profile: Researcher II / Annual Salary Range: $73,200 - $120,800 NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
