Job Summary:
The Mechanic provides knowledgeable mechanical maintenance support to maintain and repair electric and steam producing mechanical equipment, and their associated auxiliary components.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Practice safe methods and procedures for personal protection, protection of fellow workers, and protections of the public per OSHA regulations.
- Use precision measuring tools and hand tools (i.e. drills, screwdrivers, various hammers, etc.) necessary to troubleshoot and maintain devices and systems for the power plant.
- Apply knowledge of the operation of a modern electric generating station, including gas turbine operation, Heat Recovery Steam Generation (HRSG) units and Balance of Plant (BOP) equipment.
- Apply knowledge of Federal, State, and Company environmental guidelines.
- Lock Out/Tag Out equipment per NRG Energy's Lock Out/Tag Out procedure.
- Communicate condition of equipment and status of jobs to the O&M Manager, other plant personnel, and outside service representatives.
- Interpret instruction manuals, blueprints, and control system drawings for the purpose of applying knowledge to daily tasks.
- Complete all written and electronic records (i.e. work orders, calibration sheets, time cards, material requests using SAP) required to document the work in progress as well as completed work.
- Continually update knowledge of plant systems and equipment.
- Make decisions about how best to repair equipment and what resources (tools, time, and equipment) are needed.
- Assist in providing skill enhancement training to other personnel.
- Work and assist NRG employees as well as contractors within various crafts and skill sets.
- Normal shop environment and out-door power plant work environment.
- Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, and high noise areas.
- Work in all temperatures and climate conditions. Some temperatures can be extreme.
- Work in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respirator protective equipment.
- Performance of duties requires response to calls 24 hours/day, seven days/week and working irregular shifts.
- Work with and around various materials and chemicals (i.e. Acid, Caustic, Ammonia, oil, grease, various solvents, etc.).
- Wear half- and full-face respirators while wearing various other protective devices (Established facial hair in the sealing area of a respirator is not permitted at any time).
- Wear and maintain personal protective safety equipment (safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, ear plugs, respirators, etc.) as required.
- Contact lenses are not permitted except for specific medical reasons.
- Work may require cross training and travel to other facilities.
Minimum Requirements:
- High School diploma or GED
- Four (4) years' experience (including apprenticeship) of industrial mechanical maintenance experience in the repair, inspection, and/or maintenance of related power plant or machine shop equipment including inspection and preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, fabricating and diagnostics.
- Must possess a valid driver's license
- Must possess a valid TWIC (Transpiration Workers Identification Card) Card or have the ability to attain one prior to date of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to weld piping and other metals.
- Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and listening ability to communicate effectively with management, co-workers, clients, and vendors.
- Ability to install, maintain, test, inspect, troubleshoot and repair pumps and valves, bearings and shaft seals, sleeves, seats, and other miscellaneous parts used in generating station equipment.
- Ability to perform preventive and corrective maintenance procedures on mechanical equipment including PdM activities.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Understand mechanical & electrical control equipment and basic power plant equipment operation
- Ability to use a personal computer and associated software (i.e. SAP, Excel, Outlook, Word, etc.).
- Ability to provide direction and lead mechanical contractors/vendors
- Able to perform testing, inspection, and repair on plant equipment
- Ability to operate Company vehicles and equipment (forklift, manlift, etc.) and maintain operating licenses and certifications
- Ability and knowledge ofhow to operate hand and power-driven tools and equipment
- Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner
- Ability to interpret and apply instructions, specifications, blueprints, and procedures
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and time management skills
- Ability to read, write and speak the English language
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet stringent deadlines
- Ability to perform work both indoors and outdoors, requiring continuous physical activity, sometimes of a strenuous and stressful nature
- Ability to work alone in remote areas and areas with limited lighting
- Ability to work in areas that may be noisy and dirty
- Ability to order proper materials for job completion.
- Knowledge of handling and disposal of waste material generated by maintenance activities.
- Ability to use basic mathematics to calculate measurements and computations needed for repair and maintenance of power plant equipment.
- Ability to train and qualify to operate machine shop equipment (i.e. drill presses, lathes, etc.).
- Ability to use oxygen and acetylene torches.
- Ability to perform basic machining operations.
- Ability to set up rigging for installing/removing equipment.
- Ability to perform plumbing and pipe fitting tasks.
- Ability to use gas and/or arc welding equipment.
- Ability to certify as a pressure welder.
- Ability to remove and replace insulating materials with proper training.
- Ability to meet (on an annual basis) appropriate physical evaluations identified by NRG as prerequisites to performing certain task and training activities
- Perform routine cleaning of work area and other areas around the facility
Physical Requirements:
- Power Plant Environment-Work both inside and outside in all temperatures and climate conditions in accordance with Heat Stress procedures. Around large rotating equipment, energized electrical equipment in high noise areas, and/or in confined places, on elevations in excess of 150 feet, or from platforms at heights of 5 feet or greater. Climb stairways, ladders, and work from aerial devices.
- Daily work expectation requires ability to perform tasks by walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, climbing, and working with hand tools (up to 25 pounds) in position above and below head, and extended from body to complete repairs.
- Lift, carry, position and use tools and/or equipment (weighing up to 50 lbs.) in awkward positions, swing various weights of sledge hammers, stoop and bend to reach valves, pull on chain-falls or come-a-longs.
- Ability to twist the body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating company equipment.
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required including but not limited to steel-toed boots, respirators, goggles, and safety glasses etc.
- Must be able to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals.
- Must be able to discern assorted colors
- Performance of duties may cause frequent jarring of the body.
