The Team You’ll Work With
The Federal Affairs Office seeks a dynamic, public service-minded applicant to serve as Legislative
Representative. The Office is the intergovernmental liaison between City government and the Federal
government and is responsible for presenting the City's interests to the Congress and the Executive
Branch. In addition to possessing strong legislative and analytical skills, the Legislative Representative
must be comfortable working on high profile issues, thrive under tight deadlines, and be capable of
managing risk and working collaboratively with colleagues in City Hall, executive agencies across City
government, Congress and the Executive Branch.
The Problems You’ll Solve
New York City’s Office of Federal Affairs seeks a Legislative Representative with congressional and
legislative experience, knowledge of policy issues relevant to cities, strong multi-tasking skills, great
attention to detail, and strong interpersonal communication skills. The position is based in the City’s
Washington, D.C. Federal Affairs Office. Regular travel to New York City is required. The position
requires the ability to draft policy letters, manage multiple priorities, and work under pressure to meet
deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
The Legislative Representative, working with the Director and colleagues, effects passage,
modification, or defeat of federal legislation on a wide range of subjects including education, health and
human services, child welfare and other areas affected by federal law and regulations.
Key tasks include:
- Represent the City of New York in Washington D.C., in a liaison capacity on appropriations
- Work closely with City Hall and New York City Agencies to ensure they are informed
- Act as legislative liaison to Congress and the Administration to ensure the City of New York
budget, authorizing, and appropriating allocations;
- Assists in the drafting and introduction of legislation that impact the City as well as tracking
- Build coalitions of like-minded federal advocacy representatives to support New York
- positions
About You
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalency | bachelor’s or associate degree preferred.
- Four years of completed federal legislative experience preferred. Strong interpersonal,
collaborative, time-management, and organizational skills; and
- Broad experience working with the federal government or relevant policy experience, and
national allies is preferred, particularly on issues related to appropriations.
- A commitment to public service, and a demonstrated ability to be a team player in a dynamic
and fast-paced environment;
- Ability to work in a responsive, collaborative, and creative manner on a wide variety of
legislative matters;
- Dedication to client services, willingness to be responsive and work late hours and weekends, as
needed;
- Familiarity with Federal government and New York City as it relates outlined policy areas and
legislative portfolio
- Excellent legal writing, communication, and research skills;
Salary
The City of New York Office of the Mayor’s compensation package includes a market competitive
salary, equity for all full-time roles and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation range for this role
is $60,000 to $85,000.
Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on candidate experience and expertise, and other
factors.
