JURISDICTIONAL CLASS: Non-Competitive

TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: Hourly position (37.5 hours per week)
8am to 4pm
Monday-Friday

OVERVIEW OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will operate as a part of the Environmental Field Team. Duties include:

  • Site visitation, survey, and reporting on environmental resources for capital & regional construction projects.
  • Recommend ecological best management practices and green solutions to project plans when appropriate.
  • Map making, data entry, related to rare, threatened, endangered, locally rare, and invasive species.
  • Independent surveying while collaborating and communicating as a part of a team.
  • Regular travel to project sites throughout the Finger Lakes, transportation provided from work office.
  • Work closely with Environmental Field Team, Capital, Regional Maintenance, and Trails Crew staff.
  • May perform additional duties as necessary.
  • This position will require the incumbent to work 50% in the office and 50% working in the field.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience in maintenance, construction, landscaping, business operations, park operations, or in an organized recreation program. Please read operating needs for full depiction of job duties.

OPERATING NEEDS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline is preferred but not required.
  • Extensive NYS plant identification skills is preferred but not required.
  • Extensive experience with Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) products, GPS, and Arc GIS online is preferred but not required.
  • Possess a pesticide applicator license in category 2 or 3A, or willingness to obtain license on-the-job.
  • Possess National Wildfire Coordinating Group certification, or willingness to obtain certification on-the-job.
  • At least 2 years of field work experience, field work in NYS or similar ecosystems is preferred but not required.
  • Must be able to follow written direction, record and document required information and communicate effectively.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New York State Driver’s License as a term and condition of employment.
  • Knowledge of green construction solutions, stream dynamics is preferred but not required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with staff and park patrons.
  • Must have good organizational skills, accuracy, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must have basic computer knowledge in Microsoft Word, Power Point & Excel.
  • Willingness to travel frequently, both day trips and occasional overnights within the Finger Lakes Region.
  • Understanding of effective field survey techniques and best applications.
